Meaning
Used to express the highest degree of something among a group of three or more items. For comparing only two items, a different pattern is used.
Note
A superlative expression highlighting the top item in a category of three or more. When comparing only two alternatives, using '〜より〜(のほうが)〜' is more appropriate than '一番'.

果物の中で、りんごがいちばん好きです。
