Meaning
Used to express that one wants to do something but cannot due to social norms, common sense, psychological reasons, or external circumstances.
Note
Used when someone feels a strong psychological or social pressure to NOT do something, even if they want to. Often involves sense of duty or common sense.
Examples
明日は大切な試験なので、休むわけにはいかない。
Since tomorrow is an important exam, I can't afford to take the day off.
社長の命令だから、背くわけにはいかない。
Since it is the president's order, I can't afford to disobey.
みんな汗をかいて働いているのに、私だけ休むわけにはいかない。
While everyone is sweating and working, I can't be the only one resting.
お金がないので、新しい車を買うわけにはいかない。
Since I don't have money, I can't afford to buy a new car.
これから運転するので、お酒を飲むわけにはいきません。
Since I will be driving later, I cannot drink alcohol.
