For me, now in my fifth year at the company, last month's incident is still one of those failures I would rather not remember. Around the office people often say, "The first thirty minutes of an apology decide everything," but I only truly understood what that meant after I became the one on the spot. Until then, I had only listened to my seniors' war stories and assumed I had grasped the lesson.

It started when I accidentally attached a quote sheet meant for one client to an email going to the contact person at a completely different company. The instant I clicked send, I noticed, and froze in front of my screen. In that moment, it was not so much that I wanted to collapse onto my desk — my mind simply went blank, to be honest about it.

The email clearly stated the client's company name and the proposed price, the kind of content that could easily lead to a data leak. There was no way the problem would solve itself if I just bottled it up alone, so I stood up at once and headed straight for my section manager's desk. Nothing begins until you report it, I kept telling myself as I walked.

My manager heard me out to the very end and then calmly instructed me, "First, call the person who got the email by mistake and ask them to delete it." Precisely because I had been bracing for a scolding, his composed response made me straighten my back instead. As you would expect from someone in a management role, he could instantly judge the priority of the first steps, and that impressed me.
