Ever since I started asking my smart speaker about the weather instead of using an alarm clock, I have almost completely stopped opening the newspaper. When I ask "Do I need an umbrella today?", on top of the temperature and rain probability, it volunteers things I never asked about: the pollen count, traffic conditions on my commute, and so on. The convenience is beyond words, but my own ability to read the weather is unmistakably eroding.
On the train to work, the video app pours a stream of "recommended for you" clips at me without pause. With one flick of my finger, it lines up things I watched yesterday, things I searched for last week, even hobby videos I peeked at just once years ago, as if it has seen straight through me. In the hands of the algorithm, even fragments of interest the user has forgotten get reassembled into product.
Once at the office, asking generative AI to draft the day's emails has become my daily routine before I noticed. The other day, when I left an apology letter to a client entirely to the AI, the text came back too perfect, and ended up sounding strangely heartless. I wrote "Please accept my sincere apologies", yet I was not the one who actually wrote it. My finger hesitated for an instant on the send button.
When my division head said, "Your writing has gotten better lately, hasn't it?", I had no choice but to smile awkwardly. It is not unpleasant to be praised, but as long as the skill is not really my own, I cannot enjoy it honestly. While replying "Thank you very much", I asked myself silently: it's not as if I were an AI, so where on earth have my own words gone?
At lunch, walking to a nearby set-meal place with my colleague Tanaka, the topic turned to translation apps. Last week, he tried to tell the hotel front desk on a business trip that "the shower has no hot water", but the app translated "hot water" as "temperature". "As someone who can't speak English, I have no choice but to rely on it, but sometimes it ends up being no laughing matter," Tanaka said, shrugging.
The accuracy of machine translation has improved remarkably over the last few years, yet there are still areas where it cannot fully convey cultural nuance or the emotional temperature of words. Translate "otsukaresama" literally and your listener will give you a puzzled look. The relationships behind the words and the atmosphere of the moment are things data alone cannot pick up.
In the afternoon meeting, the automatic minutes-generation tool earned its keep. It accurately separates each speaker's name from what they said. To the extent that I no longer have to take notes by hand, I can focus on the discussion itself, and for that I am genuinely grateful.
