Calligraphy is a traditional Japanese art of writing characters with brush and ink. "Sho" is not thought of as merely letters — it is regarded as something that reveals the writer's feelings and personality. It is said that a single piece can even reflect the state of the writer's heart.

The history of calligraphy is long, and the art is said to have been brought over from China together with the kanji themselves. The writing techniques originally used to copy Buddhist scriptures gradually developed, over a long stretch of time, into an art unique to Japan. In the Heian period, a beautiful script called "kana" was born and was apparently used to write waka poems and stories.

There are many famous calligraphers in history. In China, Wang Xizhi is especially well known, and in Japan, Kukai — their works are still preserved today as national treasures. Many people have probably come across their names in textbooks or at art museums.

To begin practicing calligraphy, you need four tools: brush, ink, inkstone, and paper. These are known as the "four treasures of the study" and have been valued for a very long time. First you grind ink on the inkstone, load the brush, and only then begin writing on the paper. Unless you sit properly and concentrate, you cannot produce a straight and beautiful line.
