This morning I was heading to the office on my usual train. Just as I was getting ready to get off at the next station, I noticed that the smartphone that should have been in my pocket wasn't there. I rummaged through my bag again and again, but I couldn't find it anywhere. My heart started pounding and my mind went completely blank.
When I tried to remember carefully, I had a feeling that earlier, while I was sitting down, I had silenced the phone so it wouldn't ring and set it on the seat beside me. When I stood up, I must have just forgotten it and gotten off the train. I got off at the next station and ran straight to the station attendant.
"I'm sorry — I think I left my smartphone on the train," I said, slightly out of breath. The attendant replied in a calm voice, "What time was the train you took?" "I think it was around the eight-thirty inbound train. It's a black smartphone with a blue case," I explained. The attendant took notes and listened to me carefully.
"Let me check whether it's been turned in to the lost-and-found center," she said, and called right away. While I waited for the phone call to go through, I was a nervous wreck. The phone itself wasn't all that expensive, but it had every photo of my family and friends, and all of my work contacts.
After about ten minutes, the attendant smiled and told me, "We have a matching one. Please go to the Ikebukuro lost-and-found center to pick it up." I was so relieved that I found myself saying "Thank you so much" over and over. I got straight on the next train and headed for Ikebukuro.
At the lost-and-found center, all I had to do was show some ID and fill out a simple form, and I got my smartphone back safely. The case was the same color, with the same little scratches — it was almost moving to see it again. I'd always heard that Japan's lost-and-found culture was wonderful, and experiencing it myself made me appreciate it even more. From now on, I've decided I'll always check the seat around me before I get off the train.
