Otaku Culture

About otaku culture as it spreads worldwide — anime, manga, Akihabara, Comiket, and cosplay.

Have you ever heard the word "otaku"? It used to carry a rather negative tone, but today it is widely known as a term for someone who loves Japanese pop culture — anime, manga, video games, and the rest.

Originally, "otaku" was a polite pronoun meaning "you." It is said to have taken on its current sense because young people obsessed with a particular hobby began addressing one another with that word. These days, many people are proud to call themselves otaku, and the word "otaku" is now used overseas just as it is.

The heart of otaku culture is, above all else, anime and manga. Japanese anime is highly regarded around the world, and the number of fans overseas keeps growing. Every time a new series airs on television, it becomes a huge topic on social media, and sometimes it even turns into a full-blown social phenomenon.

The films of director Hayao Miyazaki are loved across generations, from children to adults. More recently, works such as "Demon Slayer" (Kimetsu no Yaiba) and "Jujutsu Kaisen" have become massive hits, and apparently long lines have formed even at movie theaters overseas.

Akihabara is known as the holy land of otaku culture. It is not just electronics stores — specialty shops for anime goods, maid cafes, and game arcades all line the streets, and even on weekdays the area is packed with tourists. On weekends, you may sometimes spot people walking around in full cosplay.

Every summer and winter, a massive event called the Comic Market — better known as "Comiket" — is held. With over half a million attendees gathering across just three days, it is known as the largest doujinshi fair in the world.

Cosplay is also an important part of otaku culture. Many people attend events in costumes of their favorite characters, and the sheer quality of the work is nothing short of astonishing. There are even fans who spend months making a costume from scratch just to enjoy cosplay properly.

Recently, more and more foreigners have begun studying Japanese after being drawn in by anime and manga. The desire to "enjoy my favorite shows without subtitles" reportedly becomes a powerful motivator for sticking with the language. The influence of otaku culture on Japanese-language education is by no means small.

As one of the cultures that represent Japan, otaku culture will no doubt keep spreading around the world. Encounters that begin with a single piece of fiction will quietly go on connecting person to person, and country to country.
