むかしむかし、イタリアのある町に、ゼペットという木彫り職人のおじいさんが住んでいました。長年一人暮らしを続けていた彼は、ある日、子どものような木の人形を彫り上げ、ピノキオと名付けました。
Long ago, in a small town in Italy, there lived an old woodcarver named Geppetto. After many years on his own, he one day carved a child-sized wooden puppet and named it Pinocchio.
「この子が本物の息子になってくれたらなあ」とゼペットがつぶやいたその夜、夢の中で青い髪の妖精が現れました。妖精は「いつかは本当の子になれます。ただし、正直で勇気のある子であればこそ、ですよ」と告げたのです。
"If only this little fellow could become a real son," Geppetto murmured — and that very night, a blue-haired fairy appeared in his dream. "He will become a real boy one day," she said. "But only if he is honest and brave."
翌朝、ゼペットが目を覚ますと、ピノキオはもう自分の足でぴょんぴょんと歩いていました。おじいさんは涙を流して喜び、自分の上着を売って教科書を買い、ピノキオを学校に通わせることにしました。
When Geppetto awoke the next morning, Pinocchio was already hopping about on his own two feet. The old man wept with joy, sold his coat to buy a school book, and arranged for Pinocchio to start school.
ところが、学校へ向かう途中、ピノキオはにぎやかな人形劇のテントに引き寄せられ、せっかくの教科書を売ってまで中へ入ってしまいました。家で待っているゼペットのことなど、すっかり頭から消えていたのです。
On the way there, however, Pinocchio was drawn to a lively puppet-theater tent and even sold the precious book just to get inside. Geppetto, waiting for him at home, had slipped completely out of his mind.
その帰り道、ずる賢いキツネとネコが現れて、「この畑にお金を埋めれば、明日には木になって何倍にも増えるよ」とうまい話を持ちかけました。ピノキオはその話をすっかり信じ、手持ちのお金を全部奪われてしまいました。
On the way back, a sly fox and a cat appeared and tempted him with a smooth tale: "Bury your coins in this field and by tomorrow they'll grow into a tree and multiply many times over." Pinocchio swallowed every word and was robbed of all the money he had.
