むかしむかし、イタリアのある町に、ゼペットという木彫り職人のおじいさんが住んでいました。長年一人暮らしを続けていた彼は、ある日、子どものような木の人形を彫り上げ、ピノキオと名付けました。
Long ago, in a small town in Italy, there lived an old woodcarver named Geppetto. After many years on his own, he one day carved a child-sized wooden puppet and named it Pinocchio.
「この子が本物の息子になってくれたらなあ」とゼペットがつぶやいたその夜、夢の中で青い髪の妖精が現れました。妖精は「いつかは本当の子になれます。ただし、正直で勇気のある子であればこそ、ですよ」と告げたのです。
"If only this little fellow could become a real son," Geppetto murmured — and that very night, a blue-haired fairy appeared in his dream. "He will become a real boy one day," she said. "But only if he is honest and brave."
翌朝、ゼペットが目を覚ますと、ピノキオはもう自分の足でぴょんぴょんと歩いていました。おじいさんは涙を流して喜び、自分の上着を売って教科書を買い、ピノキオを学校に通わせることにしました。
When Geppetto awoke the next morning, Pinocchio was already hopping about on his own two feet. The old man wept with joy, sold his coat to buy a school book, and arranged for Pinocchio to start school.
ところが、学校へ向かう途中、ピノキオはにぎやかな人形劇のテントに引き寄せられ、せっかくの教科書を売ってまで中へ入ってしまいました。家で待っているゼペットのことなど、すっかり頭から消えていたのです。
On the way there, however, Pinocchio was drawn to a lively puppet-theater tent and even sold the precious book just to get inside. Geppetto, waiting for him at home, had slipped completely out of his mind.
その帰り道、ずる賢いキツネとネコが現れて、「この畑にお金を埋めれば、明日には木になって何倍にも増えるよ」とうまい話を持ちかけました。ピノキオはその話をすっかり信じ、手持ちのお金を全部奪われてしまいました。
On the way back, a sly fox and a cat appeared and tempted him with a smooth tale: "Bury your coins in this field and by tomorrow they'll grow into a tree and multiply many times over." Pinocchio swallowed every word and was robbed of all the money he had.
家に戻ったピノキオは、ゼペットに「教科書はどうした」と聞かれ、つい「学校で取られた」と嘘をついてしまいました。すると、嘘をついたとたん、ピノキオの鼻がにょきにょきと伸び始めたのです。
When he reached home, Geppetto asked, "Where is your school book?" Pinocchio blurted out the lie, "Someone at school took it." The instant the lie left his mouth, his nose began to stretch out longer and longer.
驚いたピノキオは、嘘がばれるのが怖くて家を飛び出しました。「楽しいことばかりの島」というふれこみに誘われて、おもちゃと遊びだけの島へ船で渡ってしまったのです。
Frightened that his lie would be found out, Pinocchio bolted from the house. Lured by the promise of "an island of nothing but fun," he set off by boat for a land of toys and play.
その島で毎日のように遊び続けるうちに、ピノキオの耳と尻尾はだんだんロバのように変わっていきました。何も気づかずに遊んでいた仲間たちも、一人ずつ本当のロバになってしまいました。
As he spent day after day there in pure amusement, his ears and tail slowly began to turn into those of a donkey. His friends, too engrossed in play to notice, one by one became real donkeys.
恐ろしくなって島から逃げ出したピノキオは、海で大きな魚に丸ごと飲み込まれてしまいました。暗く湿った魚の腹の中で、ピノキオは信じられないことに、ゼペットおじいさんと再会したのです。
Terrified, Pinocchio fled the island, only to be swallowed whole by an enormous fish at sea. In the dark, damp belly of the fish, unbelievably enough, he found old Geppetto again.
おじいさんは、ピノキオを探して海に出たまま、同じ魚に飲み込まれていたのでした。ピノキオは、はじめて心の底から後悔し、「ぼくが必ずおじいさんを助けます」と固く誓いました。
The old man had gone out to sea searching for him and had been swallowed by the same creature. For the first time, Pinocchio felt true remorse from the bottom of his heart, and vowed firmly, "I will save you, Grandpa — no matter what."
夜、魚が口を大きく開けて眠ったすきに、ピノキオは弱ったおじいさんを背負って懸命に泳ぎ、ようやく岸にたどり着きました。家に戻ったピノキオは、薬代を稼ぐために真面目に働き、毎日おじいさんの看病を続けました。
At night, when the fish opened its mouth wide in its sleep, Pinocchio carried the weakened Geppetto on his back, swam with all his strength, and at last reached the shore. Back home, he worked diligently to pay for medicine and nursed Geppetto faithfully every day.
その心がけを見届けた青い髪の妖精は、ある朝、ベッドのそばに現れて言いました。「正直で勇気のあるあなただからこそ、もう人形のままではいられません。」目を覚ましたピノキオは、本物の人間の子どもになっていたということです。
The blue-haired fairy, watching over his change of heart, appeared by his bedside one morning. "Precisely because you are now honest and brave, you can no longer remain a puppet." When Pinocchio opened his eyes, he had become a real human boy.
