I started working remotely in earnest three years ago, when my company changed its policy in response to the pandemic. At first I assumed it was only a temporary measure, but before I knew it my life had become almost entirely centered on working from home. These days things have settled into a rhythm where I go into the office just once a week.
When I first started, I worked with my laptop on the dining table. But that not only made my shoulders ache, it also wrecked my concentration, so I bit the bullet and turned a corner of the room into a proper workspace. The company began offering a home-office allowance, and with that money I bought a more comfortable desk and chair along with a larger monitor. There is also a stipend for internet costs, so my setup at home is now every bit as good as the office.
I get up at half past seven, take a short walk, and then make coffee. At nine we have a morning check-in over Slack where the team shares the day's plans. I spend the mornings focused on writing documents or coding, and at noon I sit down for a leisurely lunch with my wife. That hour of eating lunch with family is a luxury I never could have imagined back when I was commuting.
The good thing about remote work is not just that the commute is gone. Precisely because I no longer have to ride a packed train, both my mornings and evenings have more breathing room, and I can finally make time for hobbies like cooking, reading, and jogging. I can also handle the school pickup without straining, and I feel I have become a more patient member of the family than before.
