むかしむかし、ある国の王様とお妃様の間に、長く待ち望んだお姫様がついに生まれました。王様はその喜びをみんなで分かち合いたくて、盛大なお祝いの宴を開きました。
Long ago, in a faraway kingdom, the king and queen at last welcomed a princess they had longed for. Wanting to share his joy with everyone, the king held a grand celebration banquet.
国中の妖精たちが招かれましたが、金のお皿の数が足りなかったため、十二人だけが食卓に着き、一番年老いた十三人目の妖精は呼ばれませんでした。それでも宴の最中は、誰もそのことに気がつかなかったのです。
Fairies from across the land were invited, but because there were not enough golden plates, only twelve were seated at the table, and the oldest, thirteenth fairy was left out. Even so, no one noticed during the feast itself.
妖精たちはお姫様に、美しさ、優しさ、賢さなど、すばらしい贈り物を一つずつ与えていきました。あと一人で十二人目の番になろうとしたそのとき、忘れられていた妖精が突然現れ、怒りに任せて言いました。
The fairies bestowed wonderful gifts on the princess one by one — beauty, kindness, wisdom. Just as the eleventh was finishing, and it was about to be the twelfth's turn, the forgotten fairy suddenly appeared and spoke in fury.
「この姫は十五歳になったその日、糸車の針に刺さって命を落とすに違いない。」広間は静まりかえり、王様は思わず立ち上がりました。
"On the very day this child turns fifteen, she shall prick her finger on a spindle and surely die." A hush fell over the hall, and the king sprang to his feet.
すると、まだ贈り物を渡していなかった十二人目の妖精が前へ進み出ました。「呪いを完全に消すことはできませんが、死ぬ代わりに、百年間眠り続けるだけで済むようにしましょう。」
Then the twelfth fairy, who had not yet given her gift, stepped forward. "I cannot undo the curse entirely, but in place of death, she shall only fall into a sleep that lasts a hundred years."
その日から、王様は娘を守るため、国中の糸車をすべて焼き捨てるよう命じました。お姫様はすこやかに育ち、優しく、誰からも愛される少女になっていったのです。
From that day on, the king ordered every spinning wheel in the kingdom to be burned, to protect his daughter. The princess grew up healthy, gentle, and loved by all who knew her.
ところが、十五歳の誕生日の朝、たまたま両親が留守だったため、お姫様は一人でお城のあちこちを歩き回りました。古い塔のてっぺんに小さな部屋を見つけ、扉を開けてみると、見たこともない道具を回している老婆がいました。
But on the morning of her fifteenth birthday, her parents happened to be away, and the princess wandered alone through the castle. At the top of an old tower she found a tiny room; opening the door, she saw an old woman turning a strange instrument she had never seen before.
「これは何ですか」と興味を持ったお姫様が尋ねると、老婆は「糸車というものですよ」と答えました。お姫様が珍しがって糸車に手を伸ばしたとたん、鋭い針が指に深く刺さってしまいました。
"What is that?" she asked, full of curiosity, and the old woman answered, "It is a spinning wheel." The moment the princess reached out to touch it, the sharp spindle pricked her finger deeply.
お姫様はそのまま床に崩れ落ち、深い眠りに落ちてしまいました。それと同時に、王様も家来も馬も犬も、お城にいたすべての者たちまでが動きを止め、深い眠りに包まれたのです。
The princess sank to the floor and fell into a profound sleep. At that very instant, the king, his retainers, the horses, the dogs — everyone in the castle — froze where they were and were enveloped in deep slumber.
お城の周りには見る間に巨大ないばらが生え、外からは中の様子がまったく見えなくなりました。長い年月の間に、何人もの勇敢な王子たちがいばらを越えようとしましたが、皆深い棘に阻まれてしまいました。
Around the castle, enormous thorn bushes shot up in moments, hiding everything within from the outside world. Over the long years, brave princes tried again and again to push through the briars, but every one was driven back by the cruel thorns.
それから百年が経ったころ、隣の国の王子が古い伝説を耳にし、これを確かめようとお城へ向かいました。王子が近づくにつれて、いばらは静かに左右へ分かれ、まるで道を開けてくれているようでした。
About a hundred years later, a prince from a neighboring country heard the old legend and set out to see for himself. As he drew near, the thorns silently parted to left and right, as though opening a path just for him.
塔の最上階で眠るお姫様を見つけた王子は、そのあまりの美しさに思わずひざまずき、そっと口づけをしました。すると、お姫様は静かに目を覚まし、お城じゅうのすべての人々も百年の眠りから一斉に目覚めたのです。呪いはこうしてついに解け、二人はやがて結婚し、末永く幸せに暮らしたということです。
The prince found the sleeping princess in the topmost room of the tower, and so taken was he by her beauty that he sank to one knee and kissed her gently. At that, the princess quietly opened her eyes, and all the people in the castle awoke at once from a hundred years of sleep. The curse was broken at last, and in time the two were married and lived happily ever after.
