むかしむかし、ある国に美しいお姫様が生まれました。お祝いの宴が開かれ、国中の魔法使いが呼ばれましたが、一人だけ招待されなかった悪い魔法使いがいました。その魔法使いは怒って、「姫は十五歳になったら糸車の針に刺さって死ぬに決まっている」という呪いをかけました。
Once upon a time, a beautiful princess was born in a certain kingdom. A celebratory banquet was held, and wizards from all over the country were invited, but there was one wicked wizard who was not invited. That wizard grew angry and cast a curse, saying, "When the princess turns fifteen, she is destined to prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die."
しかし、別の優しい魔法使いが「死ぬ代わりとして、百年間眠り続けるだけですむようにしましょう」と呪いを少し変えてくれました。王様はお姫様を守るために、国中の糸車を燃やしてしまいました。
However, another kind wizard altered the curse slightly, saying, "Instead of dying, she shall only fall into a deep sleep for a hundred years." To protect the princess, the king ordered all the spinning wheels in the country to be burned.
お姫様が十五歳になったある日、お城の古い塔に行くと、おばあさんが糸車を回していました。糸車を見たことがないお姫様は、興味からそれに触ろうとしたとたん、針が指に刺さってしまいました。お姫様が倒れて眠りにつくとともに、お城全体も深い眠りに落ちてしまいました。お城の周りには茨がどんどん生えて、お城を完全に隠してしまいました。
One day, when the princess turned fifteen, she went to an old tower in the castle and found an old woman sitting at a spinning wheel. Having never seen a spinning wheel before, the princess reached out to touch it out of curiosity, and the spindle pricked her finger instantly. As the princess fell and fell asleep, the entire castle also fell into a deep slumber. Thorns grew rapidly around the castle, completely hiding it from view.
それから百年が経った頃、隣の国の王子様がこの噂を聞き、お城へ向かいました。茨は王子様のために道を開きました。塔の最上階で王子様が眠っているお姫様を見つけると、あまりの美しさにキスをしました。
About a hundred years later, a prince from a neighboring country heard the rumors and headed for the castle. The thorns opened a path for the prince. When the prince found the sleeping princess at the top of the tower, he was so struck by her beauty that he kissed her.
すると、お姫様は目を覚まし、同時に王様や家来たちも百年の眠りから覚めました。ついに呪いが解けたわけです。二人はすぐに結婚し、いつまでも幸せに暮らしました。
At that moment, the princess woke up, and at the same time, the king and his subjects also awoke from their hundred-year sleep. The curse was finally broken. The two were married immediately and lived happily ever after.
