むかしむかし、ある国の王様とお妃様の間に、長く待ち望んだお姫様がついに生まれました。王様はその喜びをみんなで分かち合いたくて、盛大なお祝いの宴を開きました。
Long ago, in a faraway kingdom, the king and queen at last welcomed a princess they had longed for. Wanting to share his joy with everyone, the king held a grand celebration banquet.
国中の妖精たちが招かれましたが、金のお皿の数が足りなかったため、十二人だけが食卓に着き、一番年老いた十三人目の妖精は呼ばれませんでした。それでも宴の最中は、誰もそのことに気がつかなかったのです。
Fairies from across the land were invited, but because there were not enough golden plates, only twelve were seated at the table, and the oldest, thirteenth fairy was left out. Even so, no one noticed during the feast itself.
妖精たちはお姫様に、美しさ、優しさ、賢さなど、すばらしい贈り物を一つずつ与えていきました。あと一人で十二人目の番になろうとしたそのとき、忘れられていた妖精が突然現れ、怒りに任せて言いました。
The fairies bestowed wonderful gifts on the princess one by one — beauty, kindness, wisdom. Just as the eleventh was finishing, and it was about to be the twelfth's turn, the forgotten fairy suddenly appeared and spoke in fury.
「この姫は十五歳になったその日、糸車の針に刺さって命を落とすに違いない。」広間は静まりかえり、王様は思わず立ち上がりました。
"On the very day this child turns fifteen, she shall prick her finger on a spindle and surely die." A hush fell over the hall, and the king sprang to his feet.
すると、まだ贈り物を渡していなかった十二人目の妖精が前へ進み出ました。「呪いを完全に消すことはできませんが、死ぬ代わりに、百年間眠り続けるだけで済むようにしましょう。」
Then the twelfth fairy, who had not yet given her gift, stepped forward. "I cannot undo the curse entirely, but in place of death, she shall only fall into a sleep that lasts a hundred years."
