近年、都市部の喧騒を離れ、地方への移住を選ぶ人が増えている。リモートワークの普及とあれば、必ずしも都会に住む必要はないと考える層が広がるのも自然な流れだろう。
In recent years, more people have been leaving the noise of the cities and choosing to relocate to regional areas. With the spread of remote work, it is only natural that a wider segment of the population feels they no longer need to live in a metropolis.
地方移住の最大の魅力は、なんといっても豊かな自然環境にほかならない。澄んだ空気と広い空の下での暮らしは、都会では望むべくもない贅沢である。家賃や物価の安さも、移住を後押しする大きな要因となっている。
The greatest appeal of moving to the countryside is, without question, its rich natural environment. Life under clear air and wide-open skies is a luxury that cities can hardly offer. Lower rent and cost of living are also major factors pushing people to move.
しかし、地方生活が良いことずくめかと問われれば、そうとも限らない。公共交通機関の便が悪く、車なしには生活が成り立たない地域も多い。医療機関や教育施設の不足は、子育て世代にとって看過しがたい問題だ。
Yet if one asks whether life in the regions is nothing but upside, that is not necessarily so. Public transport is often poor, and many areas are hard to live in without a car. Shortages of medical facilities and schools are a problem that families raising children can hardly overlook.
地域コミュニティとの関わり方も、移住者にとっての大きな課題と言える。都会の匿名性に慣れた人間が、濃密な近所付き合いに戸惑うことも少なからずある。地元の慣習はおろか、ゴミ出しのルール一つとっても、新参者には分からないことだらけなのが実情だ。
How to relate to the local community is also a major challenge for newcomers. Not a few people, accustomed to the anonymity of the city, feel at a loss amid close-knit neighborly ties. Local customs aside, even the rules for putting out the trash are full of things newcomers do not know.
一方、都市生活にもまして地方が優れている点がある。それは、人と人との距離の近さだ。困ったときに助け合う精神が生きており、孤立しがちな都市生活にひきかえ、温かな人間関係を築きやすい環境がある。
On the other hand, there are respects in which rural areas surpass urban life. That is the closeness between people. A spirit of mutual help in times of trouble still thrives, and unlike the isolation that often marks city life, the environment makes it easier to build warm human relationships.
移住の成否は、個人の価値観や生活スタイルのいかんによるところが大きい。理想と現実の乖離に苦しみ、都会に戻る人がいるのも事実である。だが、入念な下調べを経て移住に踏み切った人々の多くは、新たな土地での暮らしに確かな手応えを感じている。
Whether a move succeeds depends heavily on each person’s values and lifestyle. It is also true that some suffer when ideal and reality diverge and return to the city. Still, many who have made the leap after careful research feel a solid sense of fulfillment in their new homes.
都市か地方かという二項対立ではなく、多様な暮らし方を認め合う社会こそ、これからの日本に求められる姿ではなかろうか。
Rather than a binary choice between city and country, a society that accepts diverse ways of living may be what Japan needs from here on.
