Sentence Structure

Japanese sentence structure is fundamentally different from English. The Main Verb always comes at the end.

SOV (Subject - Object - Verb)
Subject
Watashi wa
(I)
Object
Sushi o
(Sushi)
Verb
Taberu
(Eat)

"I eat sushi" becomes "I sushi eat".

Modifying Clauses

In Japanese, you modify a noun by placing a verb phrase directly in front of it. No "that", "which", or "who" is needed.

English

The person who is eating sushi.

Japanese

Sushi o taberu hito.
(Sushi-eating person)
