Verb Ba Form
Learn the formation of the Ba-form and how to use it to express conditions.
Introduction to the Ba-form
The Ba-form expresses 'if' conditions: 食べれば means 'if you eat,' 行けば means 'if you go.' It describes natural or hypothetical consequences — if A happens, then B follows.
Japanese has several ways to say 'if' (ば, たら, なら, と), and each carries a different nuance. The ば-conditional focuses on general or natural outcomes and has one important restriction: the result clause should not describe the speaker's deliberate action. For example, you would say 安ければ買います (if it's cheap, I'll buy it) but not 東京に行けば、友達に会います — for that, たら is more natural.
The ば-form applies to verbs, adjectives, and nouns, each with slightly different conjugation rules.
The conjugation rules depend on the word category.
For Group 1 verbs, change the final vowel of the dictionary form to the e-column sound and add ば.
