Buying a New Smartphone

A first-person account of replacing a five-year-old smartphone, weighing brands, monthly plans, trade-in offers, and the long setup that follows.

My current smartphone is five years old. At first there were no problems at all, but about six months ago it started getting slow, and that pushed me to seriously start thinking about replacing it.

What troubles me most is the battery life. Even after I fully charge it in the morning, by early afternoon it drops to twenty percent, and I often find myself hunting for a charger when I'm out. There's also a crack in the corner of the screen, and it looks like it could shatter completely at any moment.

So one weekend I went to an electronics store, and I found dozens of new models lined up. Honestly, I had no idea which one to pick. Domestic brands are reliable in quality, but they tend to be a bit pricier compared to overseas brands. According to a friend, even overseas brands now offer solid Japanese-language support these days, so the range of choices is genuinely wide.

I tried to sort out my criteria. In my case, I take a lot of photos, so I can't afford to compromise on camera quality. On top of that, I use my phone for long stretches during my commute, so a battery that lasts a full day is a must. Weight, waterproofing, and storage capacity matter too, but a single model that ticks every box doesn't necessarily exist.

The monthly plan turns out to be surprisingly hard to decide on. The major carriers feel safe, but because their monthly fees are high, the yearly cost adds up to a lot. Thanks to budget SIM plans that cut the bill to less than half, lately not only young people but also older folks are reportedly switching to them.

When I consulted a store clerk, they told me I could get about twenty thousand yen off by trading in my current phone. They also offered to transfer the data for free, and since the service is that comprehensive, it would be a waste not to use it. I have some attachment to the model I've used for years, but I made up my mind to switch to a new one.

About a week after ordering, the new phone arrived. I missed the first delivery and had to ask for redelivery, but the thrill of opening the box never gets old no matter how many times I do it. I started setting it up right away, and reinstalling apps and re-entering passwords ended up eating half a day.

The more convenient phones become, the more complicated the setup tends to get, and I imagine it must be tough for people who aren't good with technology. Even so, once you learn to make the most of the new features, life is bound to get richer. My old phone still has loads of memories in photos, so even after I finish transferring the data, I plan to keep it tucked away in a drawer for a while.
