昔々、ある国に、シンデレラという心の優しい女の子がいました。彼女のお母さんが亡くなった後、お父さんは新しい奥さんと、その二人の娘を家に連れてきました。継母と義理の姉たちは見た目は美しいのに、心はとても冷たく、シンデレラに掃除や洗濯ばかりさせていました。
Long ago, in a certain kingdom, there lived a kindhearted girl named Cinderella. After her own mother passed away, her father brought home a new wife and her two daughters. Although the stepmother and stepsisters were beautiful on the outside, their hearts were very cold, and they made Cinderella do nothing but the cleaning and the washing.
シンデレラはいつも台所の灰の近くで眠っていたので、姉たちは彼女のことを「灰かぶり」と笑いました。
Because Cinderella often slept beside the cinders of the kitchen fire, the sisters laughed at her and called her "Cinderwench."
ある日、王様のお城で大きな舞踏会が開かれることになりました。「王子様が結婚相手を選ぶための舞踏会らしい」と聞いて、姉たちは大はしゃぎで一番きれいなドレスを準備し始めました。シンデレラも一緒に行きたかったのですが、継母は「あなたが着られるドレスなんてないでしょう。家で留守番をしていなさい」と冷たく言いました。
One day, a great ball was to be held at the king's palace. "It seems the ball is for the prince to choose a bride," the sisters said excitedly, and began preparing their finest dresses. Cinderella wanted to go too, but the stepmother said coldly, "You don't have a single dress you could wear, do you? Stay home and look after the house."
姉たちが馬車で出かけた後、シンデレラが庭で泣いていると、突然光と共に魔法使いのおばあさんが現れました。「可哀想に。あなたも舞踏会へ行ってきなさい」と言って、おばあさんはかぼちゃを立派な馬車に変え、ねずみを馬に、そしてシンデレラの汚れた服を、雪のように白く輝く美しいドレスに変えてくれました。
After the sisters had left in their carriage, Cinderella was crying in the garden when, suddenly, an old fairy godmother appeared in a burst of light. "You poor thing. You shall go to the ball too," she said, and with a wave of her wand she turned a pumpkin into a magnificent carriage, mice into horses, and Cinderella's dirty clothes into a beautiful dress that shone as white as snow.
「ただし、夜の十二時までに必ず帰ること。それを過ぎたら、魔法が全部消えてしまいますよ」と注意しました。
"But you must be home by twelve o'clock at night, without fail. After that, every bit of the magic will disappear," she warned.
お城に着いたシンデレラは、誰も見たことがないほど美しく、王子様は一目で恋に落ちました。二人は手を取り合って、夜が更けるまでずっと一緒に踊りました。シンデレラもあまりに幸せで、時間を忘れていました。
When Cinderella arrived at the palace, she was more beautiful than anyone had ever seen, and the prince fell in love with her at first sight. The two of them held hands and danced together long into the night. Cinderella was so happy she forgot the time.
しかし、突然時計が「ボーン、ボーン」と十二時を打ち始めたので、彼女は驚いて、何も言わずに階段を駆け下りました。その途中で、ガラスの靴の片方が脱げてしまいましたが、拾う暇もありませんでした。
But suddenly the great clock began to strike twelve — bong, bong — and she startled, running down the staircase without a word. On the way, one of her glass slippers slipped off, but she had no time to pick it up.
王子様は、その小さなガラスの靴だけを手がかりに、「この靴がぴったり合う人と結婚する」と決めました。家来たちは国中の家を一軒ずつ回って、若い女性に靴を履かせていきました。シンデレラの家では、姉たちが急いで足を押し込もうとしましたが、靴は小さすぎて入りませんでした。
With nothing but that small glass slipper to go on, the prince decided, "I will marry the woman whose foot fits this shoe." His servants went from house to house throughout the kingdom, trying the slipper on every young woman. At Cinderella's home, the sisters hurriedly tried to force their feet inside, but the shoe was too small to fit.
「他に若い娘はいないか」と聞かれて、継母は「いません」と答えましたが、その時、台所からシンデレラが顔を出しました。
"Are there no other young women in this house?" the servant asked. "None," the stepmother replied — but at that moment, Cinderella poked her head in from the kitchen.
家来が「あなたも履いてみなさい」と言うと、靴はまるで初めから彼女のために作られたかのように、ぴったりと合いました。シンデレラはもう一方のガラスの靴を、エプロンの中から取り出してみせました。王子様は喜んでシンデレラをお城に連れて帰り、盛大な結婚式を挙げました。それから二人は、長く幸せに暮らしたそうです。
"You should try it on as well," the servant said. And the slipper fit her foot as though it had been made for her from the very beginning. Cinderella then drew out the other glass slipper from inside her apron. Overjoyed, the prince took Cinderella back to the palace, where they held a grand wedding. And from then on, the story goes, the two of them lived long and happy lives together.
