Environmental Issues and Daily Life

Environmental protection efforts starting from everyday actions.

When we hear the words "environmental issues," we tend to picture huge topics like global warming or rising sea levels — problems too big for any single person to fix. But when I take a closer look at my daily life, I notice there are actually quite a few things I can improve, from the trash my household produces to the way we use energy. I've been gradually changing my habits for about three years now, and what I've come to feel is that the key is finding adjustments you can keep up without strain.

What got me started was Japan's introduction of paid plastic shopping bags in 2020. Three yen per bag is hardly a steep amount, yet there's something about being charged each time that makes you hesitate, and before I knew it I was carrying a reusable bag everywhere. Along with this policy, I noticed a sudden rise in the number of people turning down bags at convenience stores and drugstores. At first I'd sometimes forget my bag and have to go back for it, but once I started keeping a small foldable one in my bag at all times, I rarely run into trouble anymore.

There's a lot you can do not only when shopping but also in the kitchen. In my household, once a week I check everything inside the fridge before planning the menu. I freeze vegetable scraps instead of throwing them away and use them on weekends to make stock for soup, which doubles as a small way to save money. The food waste problem is serious — apparently around five million tons of still-edible food is thrown out in Japan every year — so it's not something I feel I can just ignore.

Starting with supermarkets, convenience stores too have begun lining up discounted products with shorter expiration dates. Precisely because the dates are close, I shop with the intention of using them up the same day, and the taste and quality are almost identical to what I'd normally buy. When it's cheaper and helps reduce food waste at the same time, there's really no reason not to take advantage of it.

Rethinking how I use electricity has been another big change over these past few years. They say that just raising your air conditioner one degree in summer and lowering it one degree in winter can noticeably cut your yearly power consumption. I worried at first that the heat or cold would bother me, but I learned that a fan or an extra layer of clothing is more than enough to handle it. Even just replacing old appliances with energy-efficient models can lower your electric bill by two or three thousand yen a month, and over the long run it's hardly an expensive investment.

I've also become more careful about water. When I think back to the days I used to leave the tap running while brushing my teeth, I realize how much my awareness has shifted. Using leftover bath water for laundry isn't really any trouble once you get used to it, and the difference shows up clearly in the monthly water bill. Small habits — keeping showers under five minutes, wiping greasy dishes with an old cloth before washing — add up, and in the end they're what matters most.

For getting around, I try to walk or bike whenever the distance is short. If you rely entirely on the car, you risk falling into a lack of exercise, and your carbon dioxide emissions just keep rising. Of course I use the car on rainy days or when I have lots of luggage, but I've come to feel there's no need to drive somewhere I could just as easily walk to.

Of course, what an individual can do has its limits. Without efforts from companies and the government, real solutions can't really be expected. Even so, the fact that consumer choices can move the market is impossible to ignore. If more and more people keep choosing eco-friendly products, companies will have no choice but to respond by developing better ones.

I don't think we need to aim for perfection. I still buy bottled drinks occasionally, and I take planes on business trips. What matters is keeping it up within your own range — forcing yourself into an extreme lifestyle out of guilt tends to backfire and rarely lasts. Talking with family and coworkers, I get the impression that the people pushing themselves hardest are often the ones who give up partway through.

When I think about the future of the planet, I want to believe that each of our individual choices accumulates and gradually changes society for the better. Knowing that today's small actions are connected to the environment ten or twenty years from now, I plan to keep living my own version of this lifestyle, one step at a time.
