When we hear the words "environmental issues," we tend to picture huge topics like global warming or rising sea levels — problems too big for any single person to fix. But when I take a closer look at my daily life, I notice there are actually quite a few things I can improve, from the trash my household produces to the way we use energy. I've been gradually changing my habits for about three years now, and what I've come to feel is that the key is finding adjustments you can keep up without strain.

What got me started was Japan's introduction of paid plastic shopping bags in 2020. Three yen per bag is hardly a steep amount, yet there's something about being charged each time that makes you hesitate, and before I knew it I was carrying a reusable bag everywhere. Along with this policy, I noticed a sudden rise in the number of people turning down bags at convenience stores and drugstores. At first I'd sometimes forget my bag and have to go back for it, but once I started keeping a small foldable one in my bag at all times, I rarely run into trouble anymore.

There's a lot you can do not only when shopping but also in the kitchen. In my household, once a week I check everything inside the fridge before planning the menu. I freeze vegetable scraps instead of throwing them away and use them on weekends to make stock for soup, which doubles as a small way to save money. The food waste problem is serious — apparently around five million tons of still-edible food is thrown out in Japan every year — so it's not something I feel I can just ignore.

Starting with supermarkets, convenience stores too have begun lining up discounted products with shorter expiration dates. Precisely because the dates are close, I shop with the intention of using them up the same day, and the taste and quality are almost identical to what I'd normally buy. When it's cheaper and helps reduce food waste at the same time, there's really no reason not to take advantage of it.
