My Family

A first-person essay about everyday life with a family of four in a small apartment.

There are four people in my family. My father, my mother, my younger brother, and I all live together in a small apartment. Our home isn't very big, but it's always lively, and I love this house very much.

My father is fifty and works for a company. Every morning he gets up at six and makes coffee in the kitchen. The smell of the coffee he brews is what always wakes me up. His job is really busy, and there are many nights when he comes home late, but on Saturdays and Sundays he relaxes at home, reading the newspaper or watching TV. When I was little, he often took me to the park, and I still love those memories.

My mother is forty-seven and works at a hospital nearby. She is kind, and she's the best cook in the family. In the evening, she sings while she makes dinner in the kitchen. Whenever I hear her voice, I think, "Ah, I'm home." Her hobby is reading, and on her days off she sits by the window and reads for hours.

My younger brother is only twelve and still in elementary school. He loves soccer, and every day after school he practices with his friends at the park. He's shorter than me, but he runs much faster than I do. We sometimes argue over small things, but really he's a very sweet little brother.

On Sunday nights, the whole family sits around the table and takes our time over dinner. My father talks about work, my mother talks about the day's news. My brother cheerfully shares stories from school, and I have a lot to say too. The TV is off, so the only sound in the room is our laughter.

My family isn't famous or rich, but because we can laugh together every day, I think I'm the luckiest person in the world.
