Planning a Trip

Slowly planning a summer trip to Kyoto with a friend over the two weeks before departure.

Over summer vacation, I'm planning to take a two-night, three-day trip with a friend from my university days. Ever since I started living in Japan, I haven't really gotten out of Tokyo much. This year I really wanted to take a proper trip somewhere, so I've been working on the plans bit by bit for a long time now.

When I asked my friend, "Where do you want to go?" she said, "How about Kyoto? It has tons of temples, great wagashi, and apparently lots of cool spots even in summer." I've never been to Kyoto and have always wanted to go, so I said yes on the spot.

When I got home, I started searching online for hotels in Kyoto. Hotels near Kyoto Station seemed convenient, but during summer break the rates were too high — way past our budget. About a fifteen-minute walk from the station, I found a small family-run inn. The reviews were great, and from the photos, the tatami rooms looked clean and quiet.

The time you spend actually planning a trip is the most fun part of all. On the first day, after we arrive in Kyoto by Shinkansen, we'll drop our bags at the inn and head straight to Arashiyama. After taking a slow walk through the bamboo grove, we plan to try riding one of the small ferry boats on the nearby river. In the evening, we want to find a local izakaya and try dishes made with Kyoto vegetables.

On the second morning, we'll head to the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha to see the thousand torii gates. If we don't go early, the tourists will block all the good photos — so we've decided to get up at six. After visiting the shrine, we're planning to walk over to a nearby matcha shop and have shaved ice and a parfait.

Before the trip, I'm planning to finally buy the new camera I've wanted for ages. I want to take lots of photos of the scenery and of my friend's smile. There are only two weeks left until we leave. I have to keep working hard at my job, but every night before bed I open my guidebook and stare at the photos of Kyoto — I get so excited I can barely sleep.
