太古の昔、神々と人間とはまだ世界の主としてはっきり分かれてはおらず、巨人族と呼ばれるティタンたちが大地を歩き回っていたと伝えられている。やがてゼウスが父神を倒してオリュンポスの頂に座を占め、新しい神々の時代が始まった。
In ancient times, before gods and humans had been clearly separated as the masters of the world, the giant race known as the Titans walked the earth. Eventually Zeus overthrew his father and took his place upon the heights of Olympus, and so began the age of the new gods.
その新しい世界において、人間は最も弱い存在でしかなかった。寒さに震え、夜の闇を恐れ、生の肉をかじり、洞穴の奥深くに身を寄せ合うばかりだった。神々は彼らを気にかけず、どんな恵みも与えはしなかった。
In that new world, humans were the weakest of all beings. They shivered with cold, feared the dark of night, gnawed on raw meat, and huddled together deep in caves. The gods paid them no mind and gave them no blessings at all.
ところが、ティタン族の中でも知恵深いことで知られていたプロメテウスは、ひとり人間の境遇を哀れに思っていた。「彼らもまた、神々と同じく地上に生まれた者たちではないか。神々が彼らを見捨てるなら、せめて自分一人でも、彼らに手を差し伸べなければならない」と、彼は心の中でひそかに憂えていた。
But Prometheus, known among the Titans as one of the wisest, alone took pity on the plight of humankind. "Are they not also beings born on this earth, just like the gods themselves? If the gods have abandoned them, then I at least must reach out a hand to them," he brooded silently in his heart.
プロメテウスは、人間に火を与えようと決意した。火さえあれば、彼らは身を温め、夜の闇を照らし、肉を焼き、いずれは金属を鍛えることもできるだろう。彼の決意は、人類への深い愛情にほかならなかった。
Prometheus made up his mind to give humans fire. With fire they could warm themselves, light up the darkness of night, roast meat, and one day even forge metal. His resolve was nothing less than a deep love for humankind.
しかし、ゼウスは人間に火を与えることを固く禁じていた。火は神々だけの所有物であり、それを人間に渡すことは、天界の掟に背く許されない行いだったのだ。プロメテウスは、それを承知の上でなお、人類のために天界に登る覚悟を固めた。
But Zeus had strictly forbidden the giving of fire to humans. Fire was the property of the gods alone, and to hand it over to humans was an unforgivable act against the law of heaven. Knowing this full well, Prometheus still steeled himself to ascend to the heavens for humanity's sake.
彼は夜の帳が下りる頃を見計らって、オリュンポスの頂に忍び込んだ。神々の祭壇に燃える聖なる火に近づき、空洞になったウイキョウの茎の中に、その火種をひそかに納めた。誰にも気づかれないまま、彼は地上へと駆け下りた。
Waiting for the veil of night to fall, he slipped into the heights of Olympus. He drew near to the sacred fire burning on the gods' altar and secretly hid an ember within the hollow stalk of a fennel. Unnoticed by anyone, he ran back down to the earth.
人間たちの集まる洞穴へ降り立ったプロメテウスは、ウイキョウの茎を取り出し、彼らの目の前で、燃え盛る赤い火を解き放った。人々は、見たことのないその光と熱に、思わず後ずさりした。ある者は恐れて身を縮め、ある者は驚きの声をあげて、その鮮やかな赤い舌のようなものに見入った。
Coming down into the cave where the humans were gathered, Prometheus pulled out the fennel stalk and, before their eyes, released a blazing red flame. The people instinctively shrank back from the light and heat they had never seen before. Some cringed in fear, while others cried out in wonder, all transfixed by what looked like a vivid red tongue.
しかしプロメテウスは穏やかに、火の使い方を説明して聞かせた。「これは神々の宝だ。寒さを退け、夜の闇を追い払い、肉を焼き、鉱石を鍛えるための力だ。これを大切にして、決して絶やしてはいけない」と、彼は厳かに告げた。
But Prometheus calmly explained to them how to use the fire. "This is the treasure of the gods. It is the power to drive off the cold, push back the dark of night, roast meat, and forge ore. Treasure it, and never let it die out," he told them solemnly.
