Prometheus and the Gift of Fire

The Titan who stole fire from heaven for humanity and was chained to a cliff for his defiance.

In ancient times, before gods and humans had been clearly separated as the masters of the world, the giant race known as the Titans walked the earth. Eventually Zeus overthrew his father and took his place upon the heights of Olympus, and so began the age of the new gods.

In that new world, humans were the weakest of all beings. They shivered with cold, feared the dark of night, gnawed on raw meat, and huddled together deep in caves. The gods paid them no mind and gave them no blessings at all.

But Prometheus, known among the Titans as one of the wisest, alone took pity on the plight of humankind. "Are they not also beings born on this earth, just like the gods themselves? If the gods have abandoned them, then I at least must reach out a hand to them," he brooded silently in his heart.

Prometheus made up his mind to give humans fire. With fire they could warm themselves, light up the darkness of night, roast meat, and one day even forge metal. His resolve was nothing less than a deep love for humankind.

But Zeus had strictly forbidden the giving of fire to humans. Fire was the property of the gods alone, and to hand it over to humans was an unforgivable act against the law of heaven. Knowing this full well, Prometheus still steeled himself to ascend to the heavens for humanity's sake.

Waiting for the veil of night to fall, he slipped into the heights of Olympus. He drew near to the sacred fire burning on the gods' altar and secretly hid an ember within the hollow stalk of a fennel. Unnoticed by anyone, he ran back down to the earth.

Coming down into the cave where the humans were gathered, Prometheus pulled out the fennel stalk and, before their eyes, released a blazing red flame. The people instinctively shrank back from the light and heat they had never seen before. Some cringed in fear, while others cried out in wonder, all transfixed by what looked like a vivid red tongue.

But Prometheus calmly explained to them how to use the fire. "This is the treasure of the gods. It is the power to drive off the cold, push back the dark of night, roast meat, and forge ore. Treasure it, and never let it die out," he told them solemnly.

With fire in their hands, the lives of humans were transformed in an instant. On cold nights they gathered around the fire for warmth, roasted meat to satisfy their hunger, heated iron to forge into weapons, and baked clay into vessels. Before long villages took shape, and towns after them, and the lamp called civilization began to spread its light.

Meanwhile, on Olympus, Zeus saw the smoke rising from the earth and at once understood what had happened. His anger was tremendous, and thunder shook the heavens. "Seize Prometheus, who has broken my law. And as for humanity, who has been given the stolen fire, they too shall pay the price for it," Zeus declared.

As his first act of vengeance on humanity, Zeus had Hephaestus the smith-god fashion a beautiful woman named Pandora. The gods gave her gifts of charm, eloquence, and curiosity, and into her hands they placed a jar that, they warned, must never be opened, and then sent her down to the earth.

Driven by her curiosity, Pandora at last lifted the lid of that jar — and at that moment, every kind of calamity, sickness, war, envy, and sorrow, came pouring out and scattered across the world. Pandora hurried to close the lid, but it was too late; only "hope" was left at the bottom of the jar.

Next, Zeus passed sentence on Prometheus himself. He had him seized and chained to the cliff face of the Caucasus mountains, at the edge of the world. It was a brutal punishment that would not let him move for all eternity.

Nor was that all. By day, Zeus loosed a great eagle that tore open Prometheus's side and pecked at his liver. The eagle devoured his liver greedily, and only at dusk did it finally fly away.

But Prometheus was an immortal Titan. Through the night his liver grew back as it had been, and the next morning the eagle came again to repeat the same torment. Day after day, without end, it went on.

Even bound in chains, Prometheus never once spoke a word of regret. "I only brought fire to humankind, nothing more. No matter how heavy a punishment I receive, I will hold the fact that I lit up their lives as my pride forever," he said firmly to Zeus.

The months and years flowed on, and hundreds of years went by. At last the hero Heracles, in the middle of a grueling journey, came across the sight as he was crossing the Caucasus range. With the gods' permission, he shot down the eagle with his great bow, broke the chains apart from the rock face, and set Prometheus free.

Ever since, humankind has gone on telling, without pause, the name of the Titan who loved them. Even today, fire continues to light the lives of people throughout the world. The name of Prometheus, as the eternal friend of humanity, still echoes far into the starry sky.
