日本に来たばかりで、生活に必要な手続きがまだ全部終わっていません。今日は朝から、銀行と郵便局に行くことにしました。日本では、給料を受け取ったり家賃を払ったりするために、銀行の口座が必要だそうです。少し緊張していますが、早く済ませてしまいたいと思いました。
I've just arrived in Japan, and I haven't finished all the procedures I need for daily life yet. This morning I decided to make the rounds at the bank and the post office. Apparently in Japan you need a bank account to receive your salary or pay your rent. I was a little nervous, but I wanted to get it all over with quickly.
駅の近くにある銀行に入ると、たくさんの人が並んでいました。受付の機械で番号札を取って、ソファに座って二十分ぐらい待ちました。中はとても静かで、みんな小さな声で話していました。順番が来てから、窓口で「口座を開きたいんですが、何が必要ですか」と聞いてみました。
When I walked into the bank near the station, a lot of people were lined up. I pulled a numbered ticket from the reception machine, sat down on a sofa, and waited about twenty minutes. Inside, it was very quiet, and everyone was talking in low voices. When my turn came, I asked at the counter, "I'd like to open an account — what do I need?"
スタッフの方が書類を持ってきてくれて、「ここに名前や住所を書いてください。それから、在留カードとパスポートも見せていただけますか」と言いました。漢字で書くのが難しかったので、「ローマ字でもいいですか」と聞いてみたら、「大丈夫ですよ」と教えてくれました。印鑑も必要なのかと心配しましたが、外国人の場合はサインでもいいそうです。
A staff member brought me some forms and said, "Please fill in your name and address here. Also, may I see your residence card and passport?" Writing my name in kanji was hard, so I asked, "Is romaji okay too?" "That's fine," she told me. I had been worried I might also need a personal seal, but apparently for foreigners a signature is enough.
手続きは三十分ほどで終わりました。「キャッシュカードは一週間後にお家にお届けします。届くまでは、こちらの通帳でお金を出し入れすることになります」と説明されました。
The whole procedure was done in about thirty minutes. "We'll deliver your cash card to your home in about a week. Until it arrives, you'll use this passbook to deposit and withdraw money," she explained.
一週間も待つのは長いですが、しかたがありません。家賃を払う日までにカードが届くといいなと思いました。
Waiting a week feels long, but there's nothing I can do. I just hope the card arrives before my rent is due.
銀行のあと、近くの郵便局にも行きました。国の家族に、日本のお菓子や小さなプレゼントを送ろうと思っていたからです。家から重い箱を持ってきたので、腕がだいぶ疲れていました。
After the bank, I stopped by the nearby post office too. I had been planning to send my family back home some Japanese sweets and small gifts. I'd carried a heavy box from my apartment, and my arms were pretty tired.
窓口で箱を見せると、「船便と航空便、どちらにしますか。船便のほうが安いですが、二か月ぐらいかかりますよ」と教えてくれました。
When I showed the box at the counter, the clerk said, "Surface mail or airmail — which would you like? Surface is cheaper, but it takes around two months."
あまり急いでいないですが、お菓子は早く届いたほうがいいと思って、航空便にすることにしました。送料は思ったより高かったですが、家族の喜ぶ顔を想像したら、しかたないなと思いました。
I wasn't really in a hurry, but I figured sweets should arrive soon, so I decided on airmail. The postage was higher than I'd expected, but when I imagined my family's happy faces I figured it couldn't be helped.
一週間ぐらいで家族の手に届くらしいです。家に帰りながら、次は何を送ろうかと考えていました。日本の生活に、少しずつ慣れてきた気がします。
Apparently it'll be in their hands in about a week. On the way home, I was already thinking about what to send next. I feel like I'm slowly getting used to life in Japan.
