昔々、ある村に、長い間ご主人のために重い荷物を運び続けてきた、年老いたロバがいました。ところが、年を取って力がなくなってくると、ご主人は「もう役に立たないから、捨ててしまおう」と話しているようでした。
Long ago, in a certain village, there lived an old donkey who had carried heavy loads for his master for many years. As he grew old and his strength began to fail him, the master started saying, "He's no use to me anymore — I'll get rid of him."
それを聞いたロバは「殺される前に、自分から逃げ出すしかない」と思い、家を抜け出しました。「ブレーメンという町へ行って、音楽隊に入るつもりだ」と、ロバは小さく一声鳴きながら、道を歩き始めました。
Hearing this, the donkey thought, "If I don't run away myself, I'll be killed for sure," and slipped out of the stable. "I'll go to a town called Bremen and join the musicians," he murmured, and with one small bray he set off down the road.
しばらく歩いていると、道端で疲れた様子の犬に出会いました。「私はもう年で、狩りができなくなったので、ご主人が殺そうとしています」と犬は言いました。ロバは「それなら一緒にブレーメンへ行こう。お前の声は犬の音楽にぴったりだ」と誘いました。
After walking for a while, he met a tired-looking dog at the side of the road. "I'm too old to hunt anymore, and my master is about to put me down," the dog said. "Then come with me to Bremen," the donkey invited. "Your voice would suit a dog's music just fine."
少し進むと、今度は道に座り込んでいる老いた猫に会いました。「鼠が捕れなくなったから、おばあさんに川へ捨てられそうなんです」と猫が泣くので、彼も仲間に加えました。
A little further on, he came upon an old cat sitting in the middle of the road. "I can't catch mice anymore, so my mistress is about to drown me in the river," the cat wept, and he too joined the band.
さらに進むと、明日スープにされそうな鶏も加わりました。
Further still, a rooster who was to be made into tomorrow's soup joined them as well.
四匹はにぎやかに鳴きながら、ブレーメンを目指して歩き続けました。しかし、町まではまだ遠く、夜になってもなかなか着きません。森の中で泊まる場所を探していると、高い木の上から眺めていた鶏が「あそこに明かりが見える」と教えてくれました。
The four of them set off cheerfully, calling out in their different voices, walking on toward Bremen. But the town was still far away, and night fell before they could reach it. As they searched for a place to spend the night in the forest, the rooster, perched on a tall tree, spotted a light in the distance.
光のする方へ近づいてみると、それは森の奥にある一軒の家でした。窓からそっと中を覗くと、なんと泥棒たちが盗んだお金とごちそうを並べて、楽しそうに食事をしているところでした。
When they crept closer to the source of the light, they found a single house deep in the woods. Peeking quietly through the window, they saw — of all things — a group of robbers spread out around a table piled with stolen money and a great feast.
「私たちもあのごちそうが食べたい」と動物たちは思いました。みんなで相談して、ロバの背中に犬が乗り、犬の背中に猫が乗り、猫の頭の上に鶏が乗りました。そしてみんなで、声を合わせて窓に向かって思い切り叫びました。「ヒーホー!ワンワン!ニャー!コケコッコー!」
"We want some of that food too," the animals thought. After putting their heads together, the dog climbed onto the donkey's back, the cat onto the dog's back, and the rooster on top of the cat's head. Together, they all let loose at once toward the window: "Hee-haw! Bow-wow! Meow! Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
突然の大きな音と、窓に映った変な影に、泥棒たちは「化け物が出た」と叫んで、ごちそうも何もそのままに、慌てて森の中へ逃げていってしまいました。
Startled by the sudden noise and the strange shadow on the window, the robbers cried, "A monster!" and fled into the forest in terror, leaving the food and everything else just as it was.
動物たちは家の中に入り、お腹いっぱいごちそうを食べました。それから、ロバは庭の藁の上、犬はドアの後ろ、猫はかまどの暖かい灰の中、鶏は屋根の上で寝ることにしました。
The animals went inside and ate their fill. Then the donkey lay down on the straw in the yard, the dog stretched out behind the door, the cat curled up in the warm ashes of the hearth, and the rooster perched up on the roof.
やがて泥棒たちの中で一番勇気のある一人が、こっそり様子を見に戻ってきました。台所に入ると、暗闇でかまどの中の猫の目が光って、彼はそれをろうそくの火だと思い、近づきました。猫は驚いて泥棒の顔をひっかきました。
Before long, the bravest of the robbers crept back to check the house. As he entered the kitchen, the cat's eyes flashed in the darkness from inside the hearth, and mistaking them for the candle, he stepped closer. Startled, the cat clawed at his face.
逃げようとした泥棒を、ドアの後ろで犬が噛み、庭ではロバが後ろ足で蹴り、屋根の上では鶏が「コケコッコー」と大きく鳴きました。やっと仲間のところへ戻ってきた泥棒は、震えながら言いました。「あの家には恐ろしい魔女がいる。爪で顔を切り裂き、ナイフで足を刺し、棒で背中を殴って、屋根の上から『泥棒を捕まえろ』と叫ぶ怪物までいるんだ」。
When he tried to flee, the dog behind the door bit his leg, the donkey in the yard kicked him with his hind legs, and the rooster on the roof crowed at the top of its lungs. Finally back with his companions, the trembling robber gasped, "There's a horrible witch in that house. She slashed my face with her nails, stabbed my leg with a knife, beat my back with a club — and on top of the roof there's a monster shouting 'Catch the thief!'"
それを聞いた仲間たちも、二度とその家には近づきませんでした。動物たちは結局ブレーメンへは行かず、その家でずっと仲良く暮らしたそうです。
His comrades, hearing this, never went near the house again. And so, the story goes, the animals never reached Bremen, but lived happily together in that house ever after.
