来月、大学時代の友達の結婚式に出ることになりました。日本で結婚式に出るのは初めてなので、どんな服を着ていけばいいのかよく分かりません。インターネットで少し調べてみたら、白い服はだめだとか、黒すぎてもよくないとか、いろいろなルールがあるそうです。いつもはネットで服を買っていますが、大事な日のための服は実際に着てみたほうがいいと思って、デパートに行くことにしました。
Next month I'm going to a college friend's wedding. It's my first time at a Japanese wedding, so I have no idea what to wear. When I looked it up online, I found there are all sorts of rules — apparently white is forbidden, and pure black isn't great either. I usually buy my clothes online, but for something this important I figured I should try the outfit on in person, so I decided to go to a department store.
土曜日のデパートはお客さんでいっぱいでした。エレベーターで五階のレディースフロアに上がると、きれいなワンピースやスーツがたくさん並んでいて、どれにすればいいか迷ってしまいました。値段が書いてある札を見るたびに、ため息が出てしまいます。一人で選ぶのは難しそうだったので、近くにいた店員さんに相談することにしました。
The department store was packed on Saturday. When I rode the elevator up to the ladies' floor on the fifth floor, beautiful dresses and suits were lined up everywhere, and I couldn't decide which one to pick. Every time I checked a price tag, I let out a sigh. Choosing on my own seemed too hard, so I decided to ask one of the clerks nearby for advice.
「結婚式に着ていく服を探しているんですが、あまり派手すぎないものがいいです」と言うと、店員さんは三着ほど選んでくれました。「こちらのほうがお客様の年齢に合っていると思いますよ。それから、こちらの色はお肌を明るく見せてくれます」と、一着ずつていねいに説明してくれました。
"I'm looking for something to wear to a wedding, and I'd rather it not be too flashy," I said. The clerk picked out three pieces for me. "These would suit someone your age, I think. And this color makes your complexion look brighter," she explained carefully, going through each one.
試着室で順番に着てみました。一着目は少し大きすぎて、肩のところがゆるかったです。二着目は色が暗すぎて、結婚式というよりお葬式みたいでした。
I tried them on in order in the fitting room. The first was a bit too big, loose at the shoulders. The second was so dark it felt less like a wedding outfit than something for a funeral.
三着目はサイズもぴったりで、明るいベージュの色がとても似合っているように見えました。鏡の前で何度も向きを変えてみて、これにしようと決めました。
The third fit perfectly, and the bright beige color seemed to suit me very well. I turned this way and that in front of the mirror a few times and decided this was the one.
値段を見てみたら、思ったより高くて、ちょっと迷ってしまいました。でも、結婚式のためだし、これからもパーティーや会社のイベントに着ていけるはずだし、思い切って買うことにしました。店員さんが「本当にお似合いですよ」と笑顔で言ってくれたのも、決めた理由の一つです。
When I looked at the price, it was higher than I'd expected, and I hesitated for a moment. But it was for a wedding, and I told myself I could wear it again to parties or company events, so I went for it. The clerk smiling and saying, "It really does look lovely on you," was one of the reasons I made up my mind.
会計のあと、靴も買うかどうか少し迷いましたが、家にある黒い靴でも大丈夫そうだったので、今日は服だけにしておきました。大きな紙袋を持ってデパートを出た時、外はもう夕方になっていて、街の明かりがきらきらしていました。少し疲れましたが、友達の幸せそうな顔を想像しながら、結婚式の日が楽しみになってきました。
After paying, I wavered for a moment over whether to grab a pair of shoes too, but the black ones I had at home would probably be fine, so I stopped at just the outfit today. When I stepped out of the department store with my big paper bag, it was already evening, and the city lights were sparkling. I was a little tired, but as I pictured my friend's happy face, I started looking forward to the wedding day.
