来月、大学時代の友達の結婚式に出ることになりました。日本で結婚式に出るのは初めてなので、どんな服を着ていけばいいのかよく分かりません。インターネットで少し調べてみたら、白い服はだめだとか、黒すぎてもよくないとか、いろいろなルールがあるそうです。いつもはネットで服を買っていますが、大事な日のための服は実際に着てみたほうがいいと思って、デパートに行くことにしました。
Next month I'm going to a college friend's wedding. It's my first time at a Japanese wedding, so I have no idea what to wear. When I looked it up online, I found there are all sorts of rules — apparently white is forbidden, and pure black isn't great either. I usually buy my clothes online, but for something this important I figured I should try the outfit on in person, so I decided to go to a department store.
土曜日のデパートはお客さんでいっぱいでした。エレベーターで五階のレディースフロアに上がると、きれいなワンピースやスーツがたくさん並んでいて、どれにすればいいか迷ってしまいました。値段が書いてある札を見るたびに、ため息が出てしまいます。一人で選ぶのは難しそうだったので、近くにいた店員さんに相談することにしました。
The department store was packed on Saturday. When I rode the elevator up to the ladies' floor on the fifth floor, beautiful dresses and suits were lined up everywhere, and I couldn't decide which one to pick. Every time I checked a price tag, I let out a sigh. Choosing on my own seemed too hard, so I decided to ask one of the clerks nearby for advice.
「結婚式に着ていく服を探しているんですが、あまり派手すぎないものがいいです」と言うと、店員さんは三着ほど選んでくれました。「こちらのほうがお客様の年齢に合っていると思いますよ。それから、こちらの色はお肌を明るく見せてくれます」と、一着ずつていねいに説明してくれました。
"I'm looking for something to wear to a wedding, and I'd rather it not be too flashy," I said. The clerk picked out three pieces for me. "These would suit someone your age, I think. And this color makes your complexion look brighter," she explained carefully, going through each one.
