第二次世界大戦の敗北は、日本に未曾有の破壊をもたらしました。主要都市の多くは空襲によって焼き払われ、東京や大阪は見渡す限りの焼け野原と化していました。国民は飢餓と住宅難に喘ぎ、産業基盤は壊滅状態に陥っていたのです。しかし、この絶望的な地点から日本が成し遂げた復興は、世界史に類を見ない奇跡というほかありません。

The defeat in World War II inflicted unprecedented destruction on Japan. Most of the major cities had been incinerated by air raids, and Tokyo and Osaka were burnt-out plains as far as the eye could see. The people groaned under hunger and a desperate housing shortage, and the country's industrial base lay in ruins. And yet the recovery Japan made from this hopeless starting point can only be called a miracle without parallel in world history.
