ゴールデンウィークは四月の終わりから五月の初めまでの長い休みで、日本人にとって一年で一番楽しみな時期の一つです。短くて三連休、長くて九連休になることもあって、旅行や趣味、家族との時間を楽しむ人がたくさんいます。
Golden Week is a long holiday from late April to early May, one of the most anticipated stretches of the year for Japanese people. It can be as short as a three-day weekend or as long as nine days, and many people use the time for travel, hobbies, or being with family.
この期間には、昭和の日、憲法記念日、みどりの日、こどもの日という四つの祝日があります。祝日が続くおかげで、会社や学校が長く休みになります。土日とうまく組み合わせると、一週間以上の休みになる年もあります。
The period includes four national holidays: Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day. Thanks to this chain of holidays, companies and schools end up closed for a long stretch. Combine them well with the weekend, and some years you get more than a full week off.

Many people travel during Golden Week. Shinkansen and plane tickets sell out almost instantly, so it's wise to book two or three months in advance. Highways get badly congested too — a drive that normally takes three hours can stretch to ten. Every year the news puts out the "Golden Week traffic forecast."
