ゴールデンウィークは四月の終わりから五月の初めまでの長い休みで、日本人にとって一年で一番楽しみな時期の一つです。短くて三連休、長くて九連休になることもあって、旅行や趣味、家族との時間を楽しむ人がたくさんいます。
Golden Week is a long holiday from late April to early May, one of the most anticipated stretches of the year for Japanese people. It can be as short as a three-day weekend or as long as nine days, and many people use the time for travel, hobbies, or being with family.
この期間には、昭和の日、憲法記念日、みどりの日、こどもの日という四つの祝日があります。祝日が続くおかげで、会社や学校が長く休みになります。土日とうまく組み合わせると、一週間以上の休みになる年もあります。
The period includes four national holidays: Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day. Thanks to this chain of holidays, companies and schools end up closed for a long stretch. Combine them well with the weekend, and some years you get more than a full week off.
ゴールデンウィークに旅行する人はとても多いです。新幹線や飛行機のチケットはすぐに売り切れてしまうので、二、三ヶ月前から予約しておいた方がいいです。高速道路もひどく渋滞して、普段なら三時間で行ける場所まで十時間かかることもあります。テレビのニュースでは毎年「今年の混雑予想」が紹介されています。
Many people travel during Golden Week. Shinkansen and plane tickets sell out almost instantly, so it's wise to book two or three months in advance. Highways get badly congested too — a drive that normally takes three hours can stretch to ten. Every year the news puts out the "Golden Week traffic forecast."
海外旅行に行く人も増えてきました。成田空港や羽田空港は、ゴールデンウィーク中に一年で一番混雑します。ハワイや台湾、韓国など、近いアジアの国を選ぶ家族連れが多いです。最近は円安の影響で、海外より国内の温泉や離島を選ぶ人が増えているそうです。沖縄や北海道のホテルは、半年前から予約しないと取れないこともあります。
The number of people traveling abroad has been rising as well. Narita and Haneda see their busiest week of the year during Golden Week. Recently, partly because of the weak yen, more people are reportedly choosing domestic onsen and remote islands over overseas trips. Hotels in Okinawa and Hokkaido sometimes book out six months in advance.
旅行に行かない人は、家でゆっくりしたり、近くの公園でバーベキューをしたりします。気候もちょうどよくて、花がきれいに咲いている季節なので、ピクニックにぴったりです。こどもの日には鯉のぼりを飾る家庭もあります。男の子の健康を願う伝統的な行事で、空に泳ぐ大きな鯉のぼりはとても美しいです。
People who stay home spend their time relaxing or having barbecues in nearby parks. The weather is mild and flowers are in full bloom, making it perfect for picnics. On Children's Day, some families fly carp streamers — a traditional event praying for the health of boys, and the giant carp swimming against the sky are genuinely beautiful.
ゴールデンウィークが終わると、みんな仕事や学校に戻らなければなりません。長い休みの後で元気がなくなる人もいて、「五月病」と呼ばれています。気持ちを切り替えるのが難しい時期ですが、無理をしないようにすることが大切です。
Once Golden Week ends, everyone has to return to work or school. Some people lose their energy after such a long break, a phenomenon known as "May sickness." It's a hard time to switch gears mentally, so the best approach is to not push too hard.
休みは長ければ長いほどいいと言いますが、終わった後の寂しさもまた大きいかもしれません。日本に来るなら、ぜひこの季節を選んでみてください。お祝いの気分と新緑の美しさが、一度に楽しめます。
