Handling an Emergency

A conversation coordinating the immediate response to a server outage.

Manager Matsumoto, we have a serious problem. For a while now, reports have been pouring in from every branch saying they can't access the customer management system.

What? Give me the details. Has the cause been identified?

We are investigating the cause at top speed right now. According to the engineer in charge, it looks as if a failure has occurred on the database server. Apparently there are unusual signs in the access logs as well.

Understood. Unless we have an estimated time for restoration, we can't even guide our customers properly. For now, share the situation with all the branches nationwide and tell them to handle things on paper.

Yes, I just sent a mass email to the branch managers. In the worst case, they say we may have no choice but to restore the data from a backup, from scratch.

If it comes to data restoration, that would take more than half a day — too much time. In any case, make restoring the system as quickly as possible the top priority. I'll handle the report to the president.

Understood. We are already working with the infrastructure team and giving it everything we have. I will also share the situation with PR so they can start drafting an apology statement for our customers.

Good, that's the way. Share the progress again with me in an hour. As the situation changes, keep reporting in real time. I'm counting on you.

Of course. I'll also draft the first internal update myself and have you review it. Once things settle down, let's also start looking at measures to prevent recurrence.

Yes, you're right. Right now, restoration is the top priority, but if we neglect getting to the root cause, we could very well end up repeating the same thing. I'm counting on you to keep at it.
