深い森のすぐそばに、貧しい木こりの家族が住んでいました。父と継母、それにヘンゼルとグレーテルという幼い兄妹の、四人暮らしでした。
Right beside a deep forest, there lived a poor woodcutter's family — the father, the stepmother, and the two young siblings Hansel and Gretel.
ある年、ひどい飢えで食べ物がほとんどなくなってしまいました。「これでは大人だって生きていけない。子どもたちを森の奥へ置いてくるしかありません」と継母は父親に言いました。父親は反対しましたが、最後にはしぶしぶ承知してしまったのです。
One year a terrible famine struck, and the food all but ran out. "Even we adults can't survive on this. We have no choice but to leave the children deep in the forest," the stepmother said to the father. He resisted, but in the end he reluctantly agreed.
戸口で話を聞いていたヘンゼルは、夜にこっそり外へ出て、月明かりに光る白い小石をポケットいっぱいに集めました。「これさえあれば、きっと家まで戻れるよ」と妹をなぐさめました。
Hansel had been listening at the door. That night he slipped outside and filled his pockets with white pebbles that glittered in the moonlight. "As long as we have these, we can always find our way home," he told his sister to comfort her.
次の日、家族は森の奥へと入って行きました。ヘンゼルは歩きながら、小石を一つずつそっと道に落としていきました。両親が二人を置いて去ったあとも、月の光に照らされた小石をたどって、兄妹は無事に家に帰り着いたのです。
The next day the family went deep into the forest. As they walked, Hansel quietly dropped the pebbles one by one along the path. Even after their parents left them behind, the two followed the moonlit stones and made it safely home.
しかし、しばらくするとまた食べ物がなくなり、継母は二度目の置き去りを言い出しました。今度はヘンゼルが小石を集めるひまもなく、パンのかけらしか持って出られませんでした。
Before long, however, the food ran out again, and the stepmother demanded a second abandonment. This time Hansel had no chance to gather pebbles and could only bring some crumbs of bread.
森でパンを落としていきましたが、お腹を空かせた鳥たちがすぐに食べてしまったせいで、帰り道はすっかり消えてしまいました。二人は道に迷い、何日もさまよい歩きました。
He scattered the crumbs along the way, but because hungry birds ate them up at once, the trail home vanished completely. The siblings lost their way and wandered for days.
ふらふらに疲れたころ、目の前に不思議な家が現れました。屋根はチョコレート、壁はビスケット、窓はあめ玉でできています。お腹の空いていた兄妹は、夢中で壁をかじり始めました。
Just as they were ready to collapse from exhaustion, a strange house appeared before them. The roof was chocolate, the walls biscuit, and the windows hard candy. Famished, they greedily began gnawing at the wall.
「まあまあ、お腹がすいているのね。中に入って、もっとおいしいものを食べなさい」と、優しそうなおばあさんが出てきました。あたたかい料理とふかふかのベッドに、二人はすっかり気を許してしまいました。
"Oh dear, you must be hungry. Come inside and have something even better to eat," said a kind-looking old woman who came out to meet them. Lulled by the warm food and soft beds, the two let down their guard completely.
ところが、そのおばあさんの正体は、子どもを太らせて食べる恐ろしい魔女だったのです。次の朝、魔女はヘンゼルを檻に閉じ込め、グレーテルには掃除や料理を奴隷のようにさせました。
But the old woman was in truth a terrifying witch who fattened up children to eat them. The next morning she locked Hansel in a cage and forced Gretel to clean and cook like a slave.
毎朝、魔女はヘンゼルに「指を出してごらん」と命じ、太り具合を確かめようとしました。目のあまり見えない魔女に対して、ヘンゼルは細い鳥の骨を差し出し、まだ痩せているふりをして時間を稼ぎ続けたのです。
Every morning the witch ordered Hansel to "stick out your finger" so she could check how plump he had grown. Since the witch could barely see, Hansel held out a thin bird bone instead, pretending to still be skinny and buying himself time.
しびれを切らした魔女は、ついに「もう待っていられない。今日こそ食べてやる」と言って、かまどに火を入れました。「中の様子を見ておくれ」とグレーテルに命じましたが、グレーテルはわざと「やり方が分かりません」と言いました。
At last the witch lost her patience. "I can't wait any longer — today I'll eat you!" she shouted, and lit the fire in the oven. She ordered Gretel, "Have a look inside," but Gretel deliberately said, "I don't know how."
魔女が腹を立てて自分でかまどを覗き込んだとたん、グレーテルは思い切り背中を押して、戸をしっかり閉めました。これで魔女はもう二度と子どもを食べることができなくなったわけです。
The moment the witch leaned in to check the oven herself in anger, Gretel shoved her in with all her strength and slammed the door shut. With that, the witch could never devour a child again.
グレーテルは急いでヘンゼルの檻を開けました。家中の宝石をポケットに詰めて、二人は森を抜け、ようやく父親の待つ家へ帰り着きました。継母はすでに亡くなっており、父子と兄妹は宝のおかげで二度と飢えに苦しむことなく、仲良く暮らしたということです。
Gretel quickly opened Hansel's cage. They stuffed their pockets with the witch's jewels, slipped out of the forest, and at last made it home to their waiting father. The stepmother had already died, and thanks to the treasure, the father and his children never went hungry again and lived happily together.
