深い森のすぐそばに、貧しい木こりの家族が住んでいました。父と継母、それにヘンゼルとグレーテルという幼い兄妹の、四人暮らしでした。
Right beside a deep forest, there lived a poor woodcutter's family — the father, the stepmother, and the two young siblings Hansel and Gretel.
ある年、ひどい飢えで食べ物がほとんどなくなってしまいました。「これでは大人だって生きていけない。子どもたちを森の奥へ置いてくるしかありません」と継母は父親に言いました。父親は反対しましたが、最後にはしぶしぶ承知してしまったのです。
One year a terrible famine struck, and the food all but ran out. "Even we adults can't survive on this. We have no choice but to leave the children deep in the forest," the stepmother said to the father. He resisted, but in the end he reluctantly agreed.
戸口で話を聞いていたヘンゼルは、夜にこっそり外へ出て、月明かりに光る白い小石をポケットいっぱいに集めました。「これさえあれば、きっと家まで戻れるよ」と妹をなぐさめました。
Hansel had been listening at the door. That night he slipped outside and filled his pockets with white pebbles that glittered in the moonlight. "As long as we have these, we can always find our way home," he told his sister to comfort her.
次の日、家族は森の奥へと入って行きました。ヘンゼルは歩きながら、小石を一つずつそっと道に落としていきました。両親が二人を置いて去ったあとも、月の光に照らされた小石をたどって、兄妹は無事に家に帰り着いたのです。
The next day the family went deep into the forest. As they walked, Hansel quietly dropped the pebbles one by one along the path. Even after their parents left them behind, the two followed the moonlit stones and made it safely home.
しかし、しばらくするとまた食べ物がなくなり、継母は二度目の置き去りを言い出しました。今度はヘンゼルが小石を集めるひまもなく、パンのかけらしか持って出られませんでした。
Before long, however, the food ran out again, and the stepmother demanded a second abandonment. This time Hansel had no chance to gather pebbles and could only bring some crumbs of bread.
森でパンを落としていきましたが、お腹を空かせた鳥たちがすぐに食べてしまったせいで、帰り道はすっかり消えてしまいました。二人は道に迷い、何日もさまよい歩きました。
He scattered the crumbs along the way, but because hungry birds ate them up at once, the trail home vanished completely. The siblings lost their way and wandered for days.
