深い森の近くに、貧しい木こりの家族が住んでいました。食べ物が全くなくなってしまったため、厳しい継母は、「子どもたちを森の奥に置き去りにしてくるしかない」と父親に言いました。それを聞いていたヘンゼルとグレーテルは、とても怖がりました。
Near a deep forest, a poor woodcutter's family lived. Because they had completely run out of food, the strict stepmother said to the father, "We have no choice but to leave the children behind deep in the forest." Hearing this, Hansel and Gretel were very frightened.
次の日、森に入る途中で、ヘンゼルはポケットにあった白い小石を道に落としていきました。夜になって両親がいなくなっても、月の光に光る小石をたどって、二人は無事に家に帰ることができました。しかし、二度目に森へ連れて行かれたときは、パンくずを落としたせいで、鳥に食べられてしまい、道が分からなくなってしまいました。
The next day, on the way into the forest, Hansel dropped white pebbles from his pocket onto the path. Even when their parents were gone by nightfall, the two were able to return home safely by following the pebbles glowing in the moonlight. However, the second time they were taken to the forest, because they dropped breadcrumbs, the birds ate them, and they lost their way.
森の中をさまよううちに、二人はお菓子でできた不思議な家を見つけました。お腹が空いていた二人が夢中でお菓子を食べていると、中からおばあさんが出てきて、「中に入って美味しいものを食べなさい」と優しく言いました。
While wandering through the forest, the two found a mysterious house made of sweets. As the hungry pair were engrossed in eating the candy, an old woman came out from inside and said kindly, "Come inside and have something delicious to eat."
しかし、そのおばあさんの正体は恐ろしい魔女で、子どもを太らせて食べるつもりだったのです。ヘンゼルは檻に閉じ込められ、グレーテルは奴隷のように働かされました。魔女の目はあまり見えなかったので、ヘンゼルは細い骨を差し出して、まだ痩せているふりをして時間を稼ぎました。
However, the old woman was actually a terrifying witch who intended to fatten the children up and eat them. Hansel was locked in a cage, and Gretel was made to work like a slave. Since the witch's eyesight was poor, Hansel held out a thin bone, pretending he was still skinny to buy time.
ついに魔女が「もう待てない」と怒り出し、かまどの火を大きくしました。グレーテルは隙を見て、魔女をかまどの中に突き飛ばして戸を閉めました。二人は魔女の宝物を持って、無事にお父さんの待つ家へと帰りました。
Finally, the witch grew angry and shouted, "I can't wait any longer!" as she stoked the fire in the oven. Gretel caught the witch off guard, pushed her into the oven, and closed the door. Taking the witch's treasures, the two returned safely to the home where their father was waiting.
