Inviting to a Party

A week of inviting friends and preparing for the first birthday party in my own place.

Next month I'm turning twenty-five. This year I decided that, for the first time, I'd throw my own birthday party in my new apartment. Apparently a lot of people in Japan prefer to spend their birthday quietly, but I like things lively, so I'm planning to invite four or five close friends.

First, I called my old college friend Tanaka. "I'm having a party at my place next Saturday — want to come?" I asked. Tanaka said, "I'd love to, but I've got a part-time shift in the morning. I can come from the afternoon, though." When I replied, "Okay, how about starting at six in the evening?" he said, "That works." I was relieved to get an answer that easily.

I messaged my other friends too. "I'll handle the food, so could everyone just bring drinks?" I asked. Replies came back right away: "Of course," "I'll bring red wine," "Beer okay?" — all sounding excited. The number of people who said yes turned out to be exactly what I'd planned for.

I need to get my room cleaner before the party. When you live alone, sometimes you just forget to tidy up. And since it's my birthday after all, I wanted decorations too, so I went to the nearby hundred-yen shop and picked up pink balloons, ribbon, paper plates, and so on. The whole thing came to about a thousand yen at the register — a real lifesaver.

I'd been agonizing over what to cook for ages, but in the end I settled on pizza and salad. With pizza, making the dough from scratch isn't actually that hard, and salad is just chopping vegetables — simple. And I'm sure everyone will like them. As a trial run, I baked a small pizza, and it turned out better than I'd expected, which gave me a little confidence.

It's been a long time since I last got together with my friends, so I'm already excited. When I think about whether there might be some kind of surprise on the day, I get a little nervous too, but that's part of the fun. I'm sure it'll be a party I'll remember. Until Saturday gets here, I want to keep working on the preparations a bit more.
