昔々、子供がいないおじいさんとおばあさんがいました。神様にお願いすると、とても小さな男の子が生まれました。身長が一寸しかないので、「一寸法師」と呼ばれるようになりました。一寸法師は、少しも大きくなりませんでしたが、とても元気でした。
Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman who had no children. When they prayed to God, a very tiny baby boy was born. Because his height was only one sun, he came to be called "Issun-boshi." Issun-boshi did not grow big at all, but he was very energetic.
ある日、一寸法師は「京の都へ行って、立派な人になるつもりです」と言いました。彼は針の剣を持ち、お椀の船に乗って出発しました。都に着くと、大きな屋敷で働くことになり、美しいお姫様の世話をするように言われました。
One day, Issun-boshi said, "I intend to go to the capital of Kyoto and become a fine person." Holding a needle sword, he set off riding in a soup bowl boat. When he arrived at the capital, he ended up working at a large mansion and was told to take care of a beautiful princess.
お姫様と一緒に出かけた時、突然恐ろしい鬼が現れました。鬼がお姫様を捕まえようとしたので、一寸法師は鬼の口の中に飛び込みました。そして、お腹の中で針の剣を使って鬼を刺し始めました。鬼は「痛い、痛い」と言って、逃げていってしまいました。
When he went out with the princess, a terrifying ogre suddenly appeared. Because the ogre tried to catch the princess, Issun-boshi jumped into the ogre's mouth. Then, he began stabbing the ogre inside its stomach using his needle sword. The ogre said "Ouch, ouch" and fled away.
鬼が逃げた後に、「打出の小槌」という不思議な道具が落ちていました。お姫様がそれを振ると、一寸法師の体がだんだん大きくなりました。立派な男の人の姿になった一寸法師は、お姫様と結婚して、幸せに暮らしました。
After the ogre fled, a mysterious tool called "Uchide-no-Kozuchi" was left lying there. When the princess shook it, Issun-boshi's body gradually grew larger. Having taken the form of a fine man, Issun-boshi married the princess and lived happily.
