昔々、ある村に、子供がいないおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。二人は毎日のように神様にお願いしていました。「指ほどの大きさでもいいですから、どうか私たちに子供をください」。
Long ago, in a certain village, there lived an old man and an old woman who had no children. Every single day they prayed to the gods. "Even a child no bigger than a finger would do — please, grant us a child."
すると、その願いが聞こえたのでしょう、ある日、本当に小さくて可愛い男の子が生まれました。身長が一寸しかなかったので、二人はその子を「一寸法師」と名付けました。
Then, perhaps because their prayer had finally been heard, a tiny, beautiful baby boy was born to them one day. Since the boy was only one sun tall — about three centimeters — they named him Issun-boshi, "the One-Inch Boy."
一寸法師は何年たっても少しも大きくなりませんでしたが、心はとても強い男の子でした。十五歳になった時、彼はおじいさんとおばあさんに言いました。「京の都へ行って、立派な侍になるつもりです」。二人は心配しましたが、息子の気持ちを応援することにしました。
No matter how many years passed, Issun-boshi never grew any bigger, but his heart was that of a brave boy. When he turned fifteen, he announced to his parents, "I intend to travel to the capital, Kyoto, and become a fine samurai." The two of them worried, but they decided to support their son's wish.
おばあさんはお椀の船と、箸のかいを作ってくれました。おじいさんは、針の刀と麦の鞘を渡しながら「気をつけて行ってきなさい」と言いました。
The old woman made him a bowl for a boat and a chopstick for an oar. As the old man handed him a needle for a sword and a piece of straw for a scabbard, he said, "Take good care of yourself on the road."
一寸法師はお椀の船に乗って、川を下って都へ向かいました。何日もかかってやっと着いた都で、彼は一番大きな屋敷の門の前に立ちました。「働かせてもらえませんか」と頼むと、屋敷のお殿様は彼の元気な様子を見て、すぐに気に入りました。
Issun-boshi climbed into the bowl boat and floated down the river toward the capital. After many days he finally arrived, and he stood before the gate of the largest mansion in the city. "Would you please let me work here?" he asked. The lord of the house was charmed by the boy's spirited manner and took to him at once.
屋敷には美しいお姫様がいて、一寸法師は彼女の世話をするように言われました。お姫様も、勇気のあるこの小さな侍がだんだん好きになっていきました。
A beautiful princess lived at the mansion, and Issun-boshi was asked to serve as her attendant. The princess, too, grew fond of the brave little samurai little by little.
ある日、一寸法師はお姫様と一緒にお寺へ出かけました。その帰り道、突然大きな鬼が二人の前に現れました。鬼は「綺麗な娘だ。連れて行こう」と言って、お姫様の手を掴もうとしました。
One day, Issun-boshi went out to a temple together with the princess. On the way back, a huge ogre suddenly appeared in front of them. "A pretty girl indeed. I'll take her with me," the ogre snarled, reaching out to grab the princess by the hand.
一寸法師は針の刀を抜いて鬼に向かいましたが、鬼は笑って彼を口の中に飲み込んでしまいました。「これで終わりだろう」と鬼は思いました。
Issun-boshi drew his needle sword and faced the ogre, but the ogre only laughed and swallowed him whole. "That's the end of him, surely," thought the ogre.
しかし、お腹の中で一寸法師は針の刀を使って、何度も何度も鬼を刺し始めました。「痛い、痛い、もうやめてくれ」と鬼は泣きました。我慢できなくなった鬼は、口から一寸法師を吐き出して、何かを落としたまま、大急ぎで山の方へ逃げていきました。
But inside the ogre's belly, Issun-boshi began stabbing with his needle sword, again and again. "It hurts, it hurts — please stop!" the ogre cried. Unable to bear the pain any longer, the ogre spat Issun-boshi out, and as it fled in panic toward the mountains, it dropped something behind.
鬼が落としたものは、「打出の小槌」という不思議な道具でした。何でも願いを叶える宝物だと、お姫様が教えてくれました。
What the ogre had dropped was a mysterious tool called the Uchide-no-kozuchi, the Magic Mallet. "It is a treasure that grants any wish," the princess explained.
「一寸法師を大きくしてください」と、お姫様が祈りながら小槌を振ると、彼の体がだんだん大きくなっていきました。立派な大人の侍の姿になった一寸法師は、お姫様と結婚することになりました。二人は都で、いつまでも幸せに暮らしたそうです。
"Please, make Issun-boshi grow bigger," the princess prayed as she shook the mallet, and his body began to grow, little by little. Having become a fine, full-grown samurai, Issun-boshi was wed to the princess. And so the two of them, the story goes, lived happily in the capital ever after.
