むかしむかし、ある村に貧しいけれど心優しいおじいさんとおばあさんがいました。明日はお正月だというのに、二人にはお餅を買うお金さえありませんでした。そこでおじいさんは、町へ編み笠を売りに行くことにしました。
Long, long ago, in a certain village, there lived a poor but kind-hearted old man and woman. Even though tomorrow was New Year's Day, the two of them didn't even have money to buy rice cakes. So, the old man decided to go to town to sell woven hats.
町へ行く途中、雪が降る中に六体のお地蔵様が立っていました。「こんなに雪が降っていては、お地蔵様も寒いに決まっている」とおじいさんは思いました。しかし、その日は編み笠が全く売れなかったので、おじいさんはそのまま帰るしかありませんでした。
On the way to town, six Jizo statues were standing in the falling snow. "With so much snow falling, the Jizo statues must be cold," the old man thought. However, that day the woven hats didn't sell at all, so the old man had no choice but to go home empty-handed.
帰り道、お地蔵様の上の雪がさらに積もっていました。おじいさんはかわいそうに思い、売れ残った五つの笠をお地蔵様の頭にかぶせてあげました。しかし、一つ足りません。おじいさんは自分の手ぬぐいを取って、最後のお地蔵様にかぶせました。
On the way back, the snow on top of the Jizo statues had piled up even more. The old man felt sorry for them and placed the five unsold hats on the Jizo statues' heads. However, one was missing. The old man took off his own hand towel and placed it on the last Jizo statue.
手ぶらで帰ってきたおじいさんでしたが、おばあさんは「それは良いことをしましたね」と優しく言いました。その夜、二人が寝ていると、家の外で不思議な歌声が聞こえてきました。そして、家の前にドスンという大きな音がしました。
Although the old man returned empty-handed, the old woman said kindly, "You did a good thing." That night, while the two were sleeping, a mysterious singing voice was heard outside the house. Then, there was a loud thud in front of the house.
二人が外に出てみると、そこにはお米や野菜、お餅などが山のように置かれていました。遠くの雪道を、編み笠をかぶったお地蔵様たちが歩いて帰っていくのが見えました。お地蔵様が、笠のお礼に贈り物を持ってきてくれたのに違いありません。
When the two went outside, they found piles of rice, vegetables, and rice cakes. They could see the Jizo statues wearing woven hats walking back along the distant snowy path. There was no doubt that the Jizo statues had brought gifts to thank him for the hats.
