昔々、ある山の近くの小さな村に、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。二人には子供がいなかったので、いつも「子供がいたら、どんなにいいだろう」と話していました。おじいさんは毎朝山へ柴を取りに行き、おばあさんは川へ洗濯に行くのが、二人の仕事でした。
Long ago, in a small village near the mountains, an old man and an old woman lived together. They had no children, and would often say to each other, "How wonderful it would be if we had a child." Each morning the old man went up the mountain to gather firewood, and the old woman went down to the river to wash clothes. That was their daily routine.
ある日、おばあさんが川で洗濯をしていると、上の方から大きな桃が「どんぶらこ、どんぶらこ」と流れてきました。「こんなに立派な桃は見たことがない。おじいさんと一緒に食べよう」と思って、おばあさんは桃を家に持って帰ることにしました。
One day, while the old woman was washing clothes at the river, a giant peach came floating downstream — "donburako, donburako." "I've never seen such a splendid peach. Let's eat it together with grandfather," she thought, and decided to carry it home.
夕方、おじいさんが帰ってきて桃を切ろうとすると、中から元気な男の子が飛び出してきました。二人は驚きましたが、「神様がくださった子に違いない」と思って、「桃太郎」という名前をつけて大切に育てました。
That evening, when the old man got back and tried to cut the peach open, a healthy baby boy jumped out from inside. They were astonished, but said, "He must be a gift from the gods," and named him Momotaro, raising him with great love.
桃太郎はご飯を食べるたびにどんどん大きくなり、村で一番強い男の子になっていきました。ある日、桃太郎は村の人たちが困っているのを聞きました。「最近、鬼ヶ島から鬼が来て、お米や宝物を盗んでいくんです」。
Every time Momotaro ate a meal he grew bigger, and soon he had become the strongest boy in the village. One day Momotaro heard the villagers complaining. "Lately, ogres have been coming over from Ogre Island and stealing our rice and our treasures."
