昔々、ある山の近くの小さな村に、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。二人には子供がいなかったので、いつも「子供がいたら、どんなにいいだろう」と話していました。おじいさんは毎朝山へ柴を取りに行き、おばあさんは川へ洗濯に行くのが、二人の仕事でした。
Long ago, in a small village near the mountains, an old man and an old woman lived together. They had no children, and would often say to each other, "How wonderful it would be if we had a child." Each morning the old man went up the mountain to gather firewood, and the old woman went down to the river to wash clothes. That was their daily routine.
ある日、おばあさんが川で洗濯をしていると、上の方から大きな桃が「どんぶらこ、どんぶらこ」と流れてきました。「こんなに立派な桃は見たことがない。おじいさんと一緒に食べよう」と思って、おばあさんは桃を家に持って帰ることにしました。
One day, while the old woman was washing clothes at the river, a giant peach came floating downstream — "donburako, donburako." "I've never seen such a splendid peach. Let's eat it together with grandfather," she thought, and decided to carry it home.
夕方、おじいさんが帰ってきて桃を切ろうとすると、中から元気な男の子が飛び出してきました。二人は驚きましたが、「神様がくださった子に違いない」と思って、「桃太郎」という名前をつけて大切に育てました。
That evening, when the old man got back and tried to cut the peach open, a healthy baby boy jumped out from inside. They were astonished, but said, "He must be a gift from the gods," and named him Momotaro, raising him with great love.
桃太郎はご飯を食べるたびにどんどん大きくなり、村で一番強い男の子になっていきました。ある日、桃太郎は村の人たちが困っているのを聞きました。「最近、鬼ヶ島から鬼が来て、お米や宝物を盗んでいくんです」。
Every time Momotaro ate a meal he grew bigger, and soon he had become the strongest boy in the village. One day Momotaro heard the villagers complaining. "Lately, ogres have been coming over from Ogre Island and stealing our rice and our treasures."
桃太郎はおじいさんとおばあさんに「僕が鬼ヶ島へ行って、鬼を退治するつもりです」と言いました。二人は心配しましたが、息子のために日本一おいしいきびだんごを作ってあげました。
Momotaro said to the old man and the old woman, "I intend to go to Ogre Island and defeat the ogres myself." The two of them worried, but they made the finest millet dumplings in all Japan for their son.
桃太郎が道を歩いていると、大きな犬が出てきて「そのきびだんごを一つくれたら、お供します」と言いました。少し行くと、今度は猿が、そしてその次にはキジも仲間になりました。
As Momotaro walked along the road, a large dog came out and said, "If you give me one of those dumplings, I'll come along with you." A little further on, a monkey joined them, and after that a pheasant.
四人は船に乗って、波の上を鬼ヶ島へ向かいました。島に着くと、ちょうど鬼たちが酒を飲んでいるところでした。桃太郎が「鬼を退治しに来た」と大きな声で叫ぶと、鬼たちは慌てて武器を取り出しました。
The four of them boarded a boat and sailed across the waves toward Ogre Island. When they arrived, the ogres happened to be drinking sake. The moment Momotaro shouted, "I've come to defeat you ogres!" the ogres scrambled to grab their weapons.
戦いは激しいものでした。犬は鬼の足にかみつき、猿は木の上から石を投げ、キジは空から鬼の目を狙いました。桃太郎は刀を持って、鬼の親分と何度も戦いました。
The battle was fierce. The dog bit at the ogres' legs, the monkey threw stones down from the trees, and the pheasant swooped from the sky to peck at their eyes. Momotaro fought the ogre chief again and again with his sword.
親分はだんだん弱くなって、ついに「もう悪いことは絶対にしないので、許してください」と泣いて謝りました。桃太郎は「次に村の人を困らせたら、もう許さないぞ」と言って、鬼が盗んだ宝物を全部返してもらいました。
The chief grew weaker and weaker, and at last cried out, "I'll never do anything bad again, please forgive me!" Momotaro said, "If you trouble the villagers one more time, there'll be no mercy," and made the ogres hand back every treasure they had stolen.
桃太郎と動物たちが村へ帰ってくると、おじいさんとおばあさんは涙を流して喜びました。村の人たちも宝物を分けてもらって、その夜は大きなお祭りを開きました。それから桃太郎は、おじいさんとおばあさんと一緒に、ずっと幸せに暮らしたそうです。
When Momotaro and the animals returned to the village, the old man and the old woman wept with joy. The villagers each received a share of the recovered treasure, and that night they held a great festival. From then on, Momotaro lived happily ever after with the old couple, just as the story goes.
