深い深い海の底に、人魚の王様のお城がありました。王様には六人の娘がいましたが、その中で一番下の人魚姫が、誰よりも美しく、誰よりも優しい歌声を持っていました。
Deep, deep beneath the sea stood the palace of the mer-king. The king had six daughters, but of them all, the youngest little mermaid was the most beautiful, with a voice gentler than anyone else's.
お城の庭で、彼女は海の上から沈んできた古い船の模型を見つめながら、「いつか自分の目で人間の世界を見てみたい」と思っていました。人魚の決まりでは、十五歳になると初めて海の上に行ってもよいことになっていたのです。
In the palace garden, she would gaze at the model of an old ship that had sunk from above and think, "One day, I want to see the world of humans with my own eyes." By the rules of the mer-people, only when one turned fifteen was one allowed to rise to the surface for the first time.
待ちに待った十五歳の誕生日、人魚姫はゆっくりと海面まで上ってきました。すると、星空の下で大きな船が音楽を流していました。船の上には、ちょうど誕生日のお祝いをしている若くて美しい王子様の姿が見えました。彼女は一目で王子様に恋をしてしまいました。
On her long-awaited fifteenth birthday, the little mermaid rose slowly up to the surface. There, beneath a sky full of stars, a great ship was playing music. On the deck stood a handsome young prince, just then celebrating his own birthday. From a single look, she fell in love with him.
しかし夜が明けないうちに、突然激しい嵐がやってきて、船は岩にぶつかって壊れ、王子様は海に投げ出されてしまいました。
But before dawn came, a terrible storm swept down. The ship was thrown against the rocks and broken to pieces, and the prince was hurled into the sea.
人魚姫は王子様を必死で泳ぎながら、岸辺の砂浜まで運びました。王子様の命を救えたことが何よりも嬉しく、波の陰に隠れて様子を見ていました。
Swimming desperately, the little mermaid carried the prince all the way to a sandy beach by the shore. That she had been able to save his life made her happier than anything in the world, and she hid behind the waves to watch over him.
