深い深い海の底に、人魚の王様のお城がありました。王様には六人の娘がいましたが、その中で一番下の人魚姫が、誰よりも美しく、誰よりも優しい歌声を持っていました。
Deep, deep beneath the sea stood the palace of the mer-king. The king had six daughters, but of them all, the youngest little mermaid was the most beautiful, with a voice gentler than anyone else's.
お城の庭で、彼女は海の上から沈んできた古い船の模型を見つめながら、「いつか自分の目で人間の世界を見てみたい」と思っていました。人魚の決まりでは、十五歳になると初めて海の上に行ってもよいことになっていたのです。
In the palace garden, she would gaze at the model of an old ship that had sunk from above and think, "One day, I want to see the world of humans with my own eyes." By the rules of the mer-people, only when one turned fifteen was one allowed to rise to the surface for the first time.
待ちに待った十五歳の誕生日、人魚姫はゆっくりと海面まで上ってきました。すると、星空の下で大きな船が音楽を流していました。船の上には、ちょうど誕生日のお祝いをしている若くて美しい王子様の姿が見えました。彼女は一目で王子様に恋をしてしまいました。
On her long-awaited fifteenth birthday, the little mermaid rose slowly up to the surface. There, beneath a sky full of stars, a great ship was playing music. On the deck stood a handsome young prince, just then celebrating his own birthday. From a single look, she fell in love with him.
しかし夜が明けないうちに、突然激しい嵐がやってきて、船は岩にぶつかって壊れ、王子様は海に投げ出されてしまいました。
But before dawn came, a terrible storm swept down. The ship was thrown against the rocks and broken to pieces, and the prince was hurled into the sea.
人魚姫は王子様を必死で泳ぎながら、岸辺の砂浜まで運びました。王子様の命を救えたことが何よりも嬉しく、波の陰に隠れて様子を見ていました。
Swimming desperately, the little mermaid carried the prince all the way to a sandy beach by the shore. That she had been able to save his life made her happier than anything in the world, and she hid behind the waves to watch over him.
やがて、近くのお城のお姫様がそこへ通りかかり、王子様を発見しました。王子様は目を覚ました時に、初めに見たそのお姫様が自分を救ってくれたのだと信じてしまいました。人魚姫は涙を流しながら、悲しく海の底に帰っていきました。
Before long, a princess from a nearby castle came walking by and discovered him. When the prince opened his eyes, he believed at once that the princess he saw was the one who had saved him. Tears running down her face, the little mermaid swam sadly back to the bottom of the sea.
王子様のことが忘れられなかった人魚姫は、ついに恐ろしい海の魔女のところへ行きました。「人間になりたいんです」と頼むと、魔女は黒い薬を渡して、こう言いました。
Unable to forget the prince, the little mermaid at last went to the terrible sea witch. "I want to become a human," she pleaded. The witch handed her a dark potion and said:
「これを飲めば足は手に入る。しかし、あなたの美しい声は私がもらいますよ。それから、人間として歩くたび、ナイフで刺されるような痛みがあるはずです。それでもよいなら、お飲みなさい。」
"Drink this and you shall have legs. But your beautiful voice — I shall take that. And every time you walk as a human, your steps will feel as though knives are stabbing you. If you still wish it, drink."
さらに「もし王子様が他の人と結婚したら、あなたは次の朝、海の泡になって消えてしまうでしょう」と注意しました。それでも人魚姫は決心して、薬を飲んでしまいました。
She added, "And if the prince should marry another, you will turn to sea foam at the dawn of the next day." Even so, the little mermaid steeled her heart and drank.
朝、お城の砂浜で目を覚ました彼女は、王子様に拾われ、宮殿で暮らすようになりました。声を失った人魚姫は何も話せませんでしたが、王子様は彼女を妹のように可愛がってくれました。それでも、王子様の心にはずっと、自分を助けたと信じているあのお姫様の姿があったのです。やがて、隣の国のお姫様との結婚が決まり、それはまさに、あの海岸で出会ったお姫様その人でした。
She woke the next morning on the castle beach, where the prince found her and took her to live in the palace. Having lost her voice, the little mermaid could say nothing, but the prince came to cherish her as if she were a little sister. In his heart, however, there always lingered the image of the princess he believed had saved him. Before long, his marriage to a princess from the neighboring country was arranged — and she was none other than the very princess he had seen on the beach.
結婚式の夜、人魚姫の姉たちが髪を切って魔女と交換した一本のナイフを持って、海から現れました。「夜が明ける前に、このナイフで王子様を刺せば、あなたはまた人魚に戻れる」と姉たちは涙ながらに言いました。
On the night of the wedding, the little mermaid's sisters rose from the sea, bringing a single knife they had bought from the witch with their hair. "If you stab the prince with this before dawn, you can become a mermaid again," they told her, weeping.
しかし、眠っている王子様の幸せそうな顔を見ると、人魚姫はどうしてもナイフを振り下ろすことができませんでした。彼女はナイフを静かに海へ投げ捨て、自分も海へ身を投げ、太陽が昇るとともに、白い泡となって空へと消えていったそうです。
But when she looked down at the sleeping prince's happy face, the little mermaid could not bring herself to raise the knife. Quietly she threw it into the sea, then threw herself in after it. And as the sun rose, she dissolved into white foam, the story goes, and vanished into the sky.
