My First Part-Time Job

The day I went for my first-ever part-time job interview at a café in front of the station.

Ever since I started university, I'd been wanting to find a part-time job. Tuition is more or less covered by my scholarship, but I'd been hoping to start earning my monthly living expenses on my own. Last week, a friend told me, "Apparently the new café that just opened in front of the station is looking for part-timers," and I called them that same day.

The night before the interview, I couldn't fall asleep for the longest time. I'd never had a part-time job before in my life, so I had no idea what kinds of questions I might be asked. I looked up "part-time interview common questions" online and prepared my own answers in advance. On the day itself, I put on a suit and left the house thirty minutes early so I wouldn't be late.

When I got to the café, the entrance was lined with opening-day flowers, and the smell of coffee was wonderful. The manager was a kind-looking man in his thirties, who greeted me with a smile and said, "There's no need to be so tense. Let's have some tea and just chat." My nerves loosened up a bit.

The manager asked me, "When could you start working?" and I answered, "I could start as early as next week." He went on to ask, "How many days a week can you work?" and "Could you take weekend shifts?" — I tried to answer as honestly as I could. Then he asked why I wanted to work at this café, and I said, "I love coffee, and I want a job where I can bring a smile to customers' faces."

"At our shop," he told me, "talking to customers with a smile is more important than anything else. Cooking and serving — those things you can learn slowly afterward." It's my first customer-service job, so I have some doubts, but I want to take the plunge and see whether I can do it.

After the interview, the manager said, "Could you come in starting the day after tomorrow?" — and I was overjoyed. On my way home I immediately called my mom and told her, "I got the job." Starting next week, my very first part-time job finally begins. I plan to work hard so I can get used to it quickly and become useful to the shop.
