昔々、ある雪の降る冬の日に、お后様が窓辺で針仕事をしていると、針で指を刺してしまい、雪の上に赤い血が三滴落ちました。その美しい色を見たお后様は、「雪のように白く、血のように赤く、黒檀のように黒い髪の子供がほしい」と願いました。
Long ago, on a snowy winter's day, a queen was sewing by the window when she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of red blood fell onto the snow. Seeing the beauty of that color, she wished, "I would love to have a child whose skin is as white as snow, whose lips are as red as blood, and whose hair is as black as ebony."
やがて女の子が生まれ、その願いの通りの姿だったので、「白雪姫」と名付けられました。しかし、お后様はその子を産んだ後、間もなく亡くなってしまいました。
Before long, a baby girl was born, and because she looked exactly as the queen had wished, she was named Snow White. But not long after giving birth, the queen passed away.
王様は新しい奥さんを迎えました。新しい女王は美しい人でしたが、心はとても冷たく、自分が世界で一番美しいと信じていました。彼女には、何でも本当のことを答える不思議な鏡がありました。
The king took a new wife. The new queen was beautiful, but her heart was very cold, and she believed she was the most beautiful in all the world. She owned a strange mirror that answered any question with the truth.
毎朝、女王は鏡に「鏡よ、鏡。世界で一番美しいのは誰?」と尋ねていました。ずっと「あなたです、女王様」と答えていた鏡が、ある日「世界で一番美しいのは、白雪姫です」と答えたので、女王は怒りで震え始めました。
Every morning, she asked it, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" The mirror had always answered, "You are, my queen." But one day, when it answered, "The fairest in the world is Snow White," the queen began to tremble with rage.
女王は猟師を呼んで、「白雪姫を森へ連れていって、殺してきなさい」と命令しました。しかし、猟師は白雪姫の優しい目を見て、どうしても殺せませんでした。「お姫様、ここから逃げてください。どこか遠くへ行ってください」と言って、彼を逃がしてあげました。
The queen summoned a huntsman and ordered him, "Take Snow White into the forest and kill her." But when the huntsman looked into Snow White's gentle eyes, he could not bring himself to do it. "Princess, run away from here. Go somewhere far, far away," he said, and let her escape.
森の奥深くまで歩いた白雪姫は、ようやく小さくて可愛い家を見つけました。そこは、山で働く七人の小人たちが暮らす家だったのです。
Walking deeper and deeper into the forest, Snow White at last came upon a small, charming cottage. It was the home of seven dwarfs who worked in the mountains.
仕事から帰ってきた小人たちは、姫の話を聞いて同情し、「ここに住んでもいいですよ。ただし、知らない人が来ても、絶対にドアを開けてはいけません」と言ってくれました。白雪姫は小人たちと毎日楽しく暮らすようになりました。
When the dwarfs returned from work and heard her story, they took pity on her. "You may live here with us. But no matter who comes, you must never open the door to a stranger," they told her. Snow White began to live happily with the dwarfs day after day.
しかし、女王はまた鏡に尋ねて、姫がまだ生きていることを知ってしまいました。怒り狂った女王は、自分の手で白雪姫を殺そうと決めました。
But the queen, asking her mirror again, learned that the princess was still alive. Half mad with fury, the queen decided to kill Snow White with her own hands.
女王は魔法で年取った行商人の姿に変身し、半分が赤、半分が白の毒入りりんごを作って、小人たちの家を訪ねました。「美味しいりんごはいかがですか。」と老人は窓越しに優しく声をかけました。
Disguising herself by magic as an old peddler, the queen made an apple — half red, half white — laced with poison, and went to visit the cottage. "Would you like a delicious apple?" the old woman called gently through the window.
白雪姫は最初は断ろうとしましたが、半分を食べて見せられたので、安心して残りを受け取ってしまいました。一口かじったとたん、姫は声も出さずにその場に倒れ、死んだように眠ってしまいました。小人たちは泣きながら、彼女をガラスの棺に入れて、森の中の丘の上に置きました。
At first Snow White tried to refuse, but the peddler bit into the white half to show it was safe, and Snow White accepted the rest without worry. The moment she took a bite, she collapsed on the spot without a sound and fell into a sleep like death. The dwarfs wept as they laid her in a glass coffin and placed her on a hill in the heart of the forest.
それから何ヶ月か経った頃、隣の国の王子様が偶然森を通りかかりました。ガラスの棺の中で眠る白雪姫を一目見て、王子様は彼女の美しさに心を奪われてしまいました。
Several months later, a prince from a neighboring country happened to pass through the woods. The moment he saw Snow White sleeping in the glass coffin, his heart was stolen by her beauty.
小人たちに頼んで棺を運んでもらう時、家来がつまずいて棺を強く揺らしました。すると、姫の喉から毒りんごの一切れが転がり出て、彼女は静かに目を開けたのです。王子様は喜んで白雪姫を国へ連れて帰り、二人は結婚式を挙げて、いつまでも幸せに暮らしたそうです。
As he asked the dwarfs to let him carry the coffin away, one of his servants stumbled, and the coffin shook violently. Out of Snow White's throat rolled a piece of the poisoned apple, and quietly, she opened her eyes. Overjoyed, the prince took Snow White back to his kingdom, where they were wed, and, the story goes, lived happily ever after.
