Vending Machines

An article about Japan's vending machines — their abundance, variety, link to public safety, electronic payment, role during disasters, and rare regional types.

Japan is one of the countries with the most vending machines in the world. Walking around town, you genuinely see them everywhere. They sit in front of convenience stores, inside train stations, along small residential streets, even on top of mountains. There are reportedly over four million nationwide, the highest number per capita in the world.

The most common type is the drink machine. They sell tea and juice, of course, but also coffee and soup. In winter, you can buy hot drinks too, which is a real lifesaver for people commuting on cold mornings. Just remember: a red light under a button means the drink is hot, and a blue light means it's cold.

Some vending machines sell things other than drinks. Ice cream, snacks, cup noodles, even toys — the variety is huge. Recently, you can also find farmer-run machines selling fresh vegetables and eggs, and traveling through the countryside often turns up unusual ones.

One reason Japan has so many vending machines is that the country is so safe. They're almost never broken into or robbed of cash, so you can safely place them in empty locations. That probably wouldn't be possible in many other countries. Electricity costs aren't too high either, so running them 24 hours a day is still profitable for the operators.

Modern vending machines accept not only cash but also electronic money and credit cards. You can buy by simply holding your smartphone over the reader, so even without coins, you're fine. More and more machines have touchscreens that let you switch languages, making them easier for foreign visitors to use.

When a disaster strikes, vending machines can play an important role. Some are designed to release their drinks for free even during a power outage, thanks to special emergency functions. Day to day they're just ordinary drink machines, but in a crisis, they become something you can rely on.

In some regions, you'll find spots where unusual vending machines cluster together — dashi soup stock machines, takoyaki machines, fresh flower machines. When TV shows feature them, they can turn into tourist attractions. If you visit Japan, please go looking for different vending machines. You should find something interesting along the way.
