My First Curry

The day I tried cooking curry rice for the first time in my own kitchen.

Lately I've started wanting to try cooking for myself. Back when I lived at my parents' place, they always cooked for me, but now that I live alone, a steady diet of convenience-store food can't be good for me. Today, for the first time, I decided to take on curry rice. I've heard Japanese curry is easy to make, so surely even I can pull it off.

First, I went grocery shopping. Following the recipe my mom gave me, I put carrots, potatoes, onions, beef, and a box of curry roux into my basket one by one. Once I got home, before starting to cook, I gave the kitchen a good cleaning. Washed my hands, tied on an apron — all set.

I started by chopping the carrots, potatoes, and onions. Cutting onions makes my eyes water as always. After I finished with the vegetables, I cut the beef into bite-sized pieces too. Using a kitchen knife felt a little scary at first, but I got used to it bit by bit, and started to find it kind of fun.

Next, I put oil in the pot and began frying the meat. The sizzling sound and the nice smell of the oil made me feel like a real professional chef. Thinking that I was following the same steps as the cooking shows on TV gave me a little confidence.

Once the meat changed color, I added the vegetables and stir-fried them together. The heat must have been too high — I scorched the onions a bit, but I decided to trust that the taste would still be fine.

I added water and simmered the vegetables for about twenty minutes until they were soft. Scum rose to the surface, so I skimmed it off with a ladle. After turning off the heat, I dropped in the curry roux and stirred it well. When I simmered it on low for another ten minutes or so, a nostalgic curry aroma spread through the entire kitchen.

I ladled the curry over rice and dug in. The curry I'd made myself maybe wasn't as good as restaurant curry, but it still gave me a real sense of accomplishment. When I had my roommate try it too, she said, "Honestly, this is better than I expected" — that really made me happy.

After we finished eating, while I washed the dishes, I thought: cooking isn't as hard as I'd imagined. Next week I think I'll try my hand at nikujaga or oyakodon.
