Giving a Warning

A conversation where a boss gently warns a subordinate who has been repeatedly late.

Suzuki, do you have a minute? You've been coming in late a lot recently — is there a reason for it?

I'm sorry. The truth is, I've been studying for work late into the night and haven't been able to get up in the morning.

I'm genuinely happy that you're trying to study. But if it makes you late for work, all that hard work goes to waste, doesn't it?

Yes, you're absolutely right. I'm truly sorry.

Looking at the company as a whole, when someone doesn't keep time, it causes trouble for the rest of the team — so as a working adult, punctuality really is something you have to honor.

I understand completely. From now on, I'll set a firm bedtime and make sure I don't repeat this.

I'd appreciate that. By the way — you're not actually ill or anything, are you? If you're pushing yourself too hard, please tell me without holding back.

Healthwise I'm fine. It's just that I only recently started studying, and I get so absorbed in it that I lose track of time.

I see. It's a fine thing to be a hard worker. But when it comes to studying, there must be all sorts of ways to do it — saving it up for your days off, or doing a little bit each morning.

Yes, I'll take another look at how I'm doing it. I'll get my daily rhythm in order so that it doesn't interfere with my work.

Good, I'm rooting for you. When you're struggling, don't try to carry it alone — feel free to talk to me any time.

Thank you very much. From here on, I'll keep my time and work hard to become the kind of employee people can rely on.
