昔々、ある村に、ジャックという男の子がお母さんと二人で暮らしていました。家はとても貧しく、家にあるものといえば、年老いた一頭の牛だけでした。
Long ago, in a certain village, there lived a boy named Jack with his mother. They were very poor, and the only thing they owned was a single old cow.
ある朝、お母さんが「もう食べるものがないから、市場へ行ってこの牛を売ってきなさい」と言いました。ジャックは「分かりました。いい値段で売ってきます」と言って、牛を引いて出かけました。
One morning, his mother said, "We have nothing left to eat, so go to the market and sell this cow." "I will. I'll get a good price," Jack promised, and led the cow off down the road.
途中で、ジャックは不思議なおじいさんに出会いました。おじいさんはポケットから五粒の小さな豆を取り出して、「これは魔法の豆だ。これと牛を交換しないか?」と言いました。ジャックは半信半疑でしたが、豆がキラキラと光るのを見て、面白そうだと思い、牛と豆を交換してしまいました。
On the way, Jack met a strange old man. The old man drew five tiny beans from his pocket. "These are magic beans. Would you trade your cow for them?" he asked. Jack was unsure, but watching the beans sparkle in the light he thought, "These look interesting," and traded the cow for the beans.
家に帰って豆を見せると、お母さんは「こんなもののために、大切な牛を売ったのか」とひどく怒って、豆を窓の外へ投げ捨て、ジャックを夕飯抜きで寝かせました。
When he got home and showed his mother, she was furious. "You sold our precious cow for this?" she cried, and threw the beans out the window, sending Jack to bed without supper.
次の朝、ジャックが目を覚まして窓の外を見ると、信じられないものがありました。捨てたはずの豆が、夜の間に空まで届くほどの大きな木になっていたのです。「上に何があるか、登ってみよう」と思ったジャックは、葉から葉へとどんどん登っていきました。何時間か登り続けると、雲の上に広い土地が広がっていて、その向こうに立派なお城が見えました。
The next morning, when Jack woke and looked out the window, he could hardly believe his eyes. The beans he had thrown away had grown overnight into a tree so tall it reached the sky. "I'll climb up and see what's at the top," he thought, and began to climb from leaf to leaf, higher and higher. After hours of climbing, he came out onto a wide land above the clouds, and across it stood a magnificent castle.
お城のドアを叩くと、優しそうな大きなおばさんが出てきました。「ここは恐ろしい巨人の家だよ。早くお帰り」と言われましたが、お腹が空いていたジャックは「少しだけパンをください」と頼みました。おばさんは可哀想に思って中に入れてくれました。
When he knocked at the castle door, a kind-looking large woman came out. "This is the house of a terrifying giant. Hurry home, child," she said. But Jack was hungry, and he begged, "Please, just a little bread." Feeling sorry for him, she let him in.
その時、地面を震わせるような足音が近づいてきました。「フィー、ファイ、フォー、ファム!人間の匂いがする!」と巨人が叫びました。おばさんは慌ててジャックを大きなかまどの中に隠しました。
At that moment, footsteps that shook the ground began to draw near. "Fee, fi, fo, fum! I smell the blood of a human!" the giant roared. In a panic, the woman hid Jack inside the great oven.
巨人は食事を終えると、テーブルの上に金貨の入った袋を置いて、満足げに眠り始めました。眠っている間に、ジャックはそっとかまどから出て、その袋を抱えて急いで木を降りました。お母さんは大喜びでしたが、お金もすぐに使い切ってしまいました。ジャックは二度目に登って、金の卵を産む鶏を持って帰り、しばらく豊かに暮らすことができました。
When the giant had finished eating, he placed a sack full of gold coins on the table and fell into a satisfied sleep. While the giant slept, Jack crept out of the oven, scooped up the sack, and hurried back down the tree. His mother was overjoyed, but the gold did not last long. So Jack climbed up a second time and came home with a hen that laid golden eggs, and for a while they were able to live in comfort.
それでも、彼は三度目に「歌う金の竪琴」を取りに行きました。ジャックがそっと竪琴を抱えて逃げようとしたとたん、「ご主人様、助けて!」と竪琴が大きな声で叫び始めました。
Even so, he went up a third time, this time to bring back a singing golden harp. But the moment Jack tucked the harp under his arm and tried to escape, the harp cried out in a loud voice, "Master, help me!"
巨人は飛び起きて、怒りながらジャックを追いかけてきました。ジャックは急いで豆の木を降り、地面に着くと「お母さん、斧をください!」と叫んで、思い切り木を切り倒しました。巨人は大きな音を立てて落ち、命を落としてしまいました。それからジャックとお母さんは、もう貧しくならず、いつまでも幸せに暮らしたそうです。
The giant sprang awake and chased after Jack in a rage. Jack scrambled down the beanstalk, and the instant his feet touched the ground he shouted, "Mother, the axe!" and chopped the trunk down with all his might. The giant fell with a tremendous crash and lost his life. From that day on, Jack and his mother were never poor again, and lived happily ever after, the story goes.
