昔々、ある村に、ジャックという男の子がお母さんと二人で暮らしていました。家はとても貧しく、家にあるものといえば、年老いた一頭の牛だけでした。
Long ago, in a certain village, there lived a boy named Jack with his mother. They were very poor, and the only thing they owned was a single old cow.
ある朝、お母さんが「もう食べるものがないから、市場へ行ってこの牛を売ってきなさい」と言いました。ジャックは「分かりました。いい値段で売ってきます」と言って、牛を引いて出かけました。
One morning, his mother said, "We have nothing left to eat, so go to the market and sell this cow." "I will. I'll get a good price," Jack promised, and led the cow off down the road.
途中で、ジャックは不思議なおじいさんに出会いました。おじいさんはポケットから五粒の小さな豆を取り出して、「これは魔法の豆だ。これと牛を交換しないか?」と言いました。ジャックは半信半疑でしたが、豆がキラキラと光るのを見て、面白そうだと思い、牛と豆を交換してしまいました。
On the way, Jack met a strange old man. The old man drew five tiny beans from his pocket. "These are magic beans. Would you trade your cow for them?" he asked. Jack was unsure, but watching the beans sparkle in the light he thought, "These look interesting," and traded the cow for the beans.
家に帰って豆を見せると、お母さんは「こんなもののために、大切な牛を売ったのか」とひどく怒って、豆を窓の外へ投げ捨て、ジャックを夕飯抜きで寝かせました。
When he got home and showed his mother, she was furious. "You sold our precious cow for this?" she cried, and threw the beans out the window, sending Jack to bed without supper.
