昔々、あるおじいさんが山へ竹を取りに行きました。すると、光っている竹を見つけました。不思議に思って切ってみると、中に小さくて可愛い女の子がいました。おじいさんはその子を家に連れて帰り、「かぐや姫」という名前をつけました。
Once upon a time, an old man went to the mountains to gather bamboo. Then, he found a glowing bamboo stalk. Thinking it was mysterious, he cut it open and found a tiny, cute girl inside. The old man took the child home and named her "Kaguya-hime."
かぐや姫はすぐに大きくなって、とても美しい女性になりました。たくさんの男の人たちがかぐや姫と結婚しようとしましたが、彼女はいつも難しいお願いをして、誰も結婚できませんでした。彼女は人間の世界のものではないので、いつか月に帰る必要があったからです。
Kaguya-hime quickly grew up and became a very beautiful woman. Many men tried to marry Kaguya-hime, but she always made difficult requests, and no one was able to marry her. This was because she did not belong to the human world and needed to return to the moon someday.
ある夜、かぐや姫は月を見ながら泣き始めました。「私は月の住人なので、もうすぐ月に帰らなければならない予定なんです」と、彼女は言いました。おじいさんとおばあさんは、それを聞いてとても悲しがりました。
One night, Kaguya-hime began to cry while looking at the moon. "Since I am a resident of the moon, I am scheduled to return to the moon soon," she said. The old man and the old woman were very sad when they heard that.
十五夜の夜、空から美しい音楽が聞こえてきました。月の神様たちが、かぐや姫を迎えに来たのです。「今まで育ててくれてありがとうございました」と言って、かぐや姫は月へ帰っていきました。おじいさんとおばあさんは、泣きながらいつまでも空を見上げていました。
On the night of the full moon, beautiful music could be heard from the sky. The moon gods had come to pick up Kaguya-hime. Saying "Thank you for raising me until now," Kaguya-hime returned to the moon. The old man and the old woman looked up at the sky for a long time while crying.
