昔々、ある山の麓に、竹を切って暮らしているおじいさんがいました。ある日、おじいさんが竹林に入ると、根元から光っている不思議な竹が一本ありました。「こんなに明るく光るなんて、何かあるに違いない」と思って、そっと切ってみると、中には親指ほどの小さな女の子が座っていました。おじいさんは驚いて、その子を大切に家に連れて帰りました。
Long ago, at the foot of a certain mountain, there lived an old man who made his living by cutting bamboo. One day, when the old man entered the bamboo grove, he found a single mysterious stalk glowing from its root. "Something so bright must be hiding something inside," he thought, and when he carefully cut it open, he found a tiny girl, no bigger than his thumb, sitting inside. Astonished, the old man brought the child home with the greatest care.
おじいさんとおばあさんは、その子に「かぐや姫」という名前をつけて、自分の子のように育てました。不思議なことに、姫は三ヶ月ほどで立派な大人になり、月の光のように美しい女性になっていきました。
The old man and the old woman named the child Kaguya-hime and raised her as their own daughter. Strangely, within about three months the girl had grown into a full-grown adult, and had become a woman as beautiful as the light of the moon.
その美しさの噂は遠くの村まで広がり、毎日のように貴族の男たちが「ぜひ結婚させてください」と屋敷の前に集まるようになりました。
Word of her beauty spread to far-off villages, and before long noblemen began gathering in front of the house every day, begging, "Please, allow her to marry me."
かぐや姫はどうしても結婚したくなかったので、五人の貴族にそれぞれ難しいお願いをすることにしました。「仏様の石の鉢を持ってきてください」「燕の貝をください」「火の鼠の皮の服を見せてください」。
Kaguya-hime had no wish to marry, and so she decided to set a difficult task for each of five noblemen. "Bring me the Buddha's stone bowl." "Bring me a swallow's cowrie shell." "Show me a robe made from the fire-rat's fur."
誰も本物を見つけることができず、嘘の品を持ってきたり、途中で諦めたりしてしまいました。それでも、姫は誰の妻にもなろうとはしませんでした。
Not one of them could find the real thing — some brought forgeries, others gave up along the way. Even so, the princess would not become any man's wife.
