Long ago, at the foot of a certain mountain, there lived an old man who made his living by cutting bamboo. One day, when the old man entered the bamboo grove, he found a single mysterious stalk glowing from its root. "Something so bright must be hiding something inside," he thought, and when he carefully cut it open, he found a tiny girl, no bigger than his thumb, sitting inside. Astonished, the old man brought the child home with the greatest care.
The old man and the old woman named the child Kaguya-hime and raised her as their own daughter. Strangely, within about three months the girl had grown into a full-grown adult, and had become a woman as beautiful as the light of the moon.
Word of her beauty spread to far-off villages, and before long noblemen began gathering in front of the house every day, begging, "Please, allow her to marry me."
Kaguya-hime had no wish to marry, and so she decided to set a difficult task for each of five noblemen. "Bring me the Buddha's stone bowl." "Bring me a swallow's cowrie shell." "Show me a robe made from the fire-rat's fur."
Not one of them could find the real thing — some brought forgeries, others gave up along the way. Even so, the princess would not become any man's wife.
One spring night, Kaguya-hime began to weep while gazing up at the moon. When the worried old man asked why, the princess said quietly, "The truth is, I am of the country of the moon. On the night of the fifteenth day of the eighth month, an escort will come to bring me home."
The two of them cried out, "Don't say such sad things. You are our precious daughter."
The old man pleaded with the lord of the province, and that night many soldiers were gathered around the house. "We cannot, under any circumstances, let them take the princess away," they all said, preparing to defend her together.
But on the night of the fifteenth, a dazzling light descended from the sky, and the people of the moon appeared slowly atop a great cloud. The soldiers tried to draw their bows, but their bodies would not move.
With tears streaming down her face, Kaguya-hime said her last farewells to the old man and the old woman. "Thank you, truly, for everything until now. Even after I return to the moon, I will never forget you."
With those words, the princess put on the celestial robe of feathers and rose into the sky together with the people of the moon. Unable to speak, the two of them, the story goes, kept gazing up at the night sky until the moon could no longer be seen.
