Keeping a Pet

Moving into a pet-friendly apartment and welcoming a rescue cat named Momo into the family.

Ever since I was a kid, I'd always wanted to try keeping a pet of my own. But my parents' place was a no-pets condo, and on top of that, my parents kept telling me, "Not until you can really take responsibility and look after one," so I never got the chance.

Last year, after I moved into a pet-friendly apartment, I was finally able to make that dream come true. I'd been checking rescue-cat sites almost every night, and one day I felt like my eyes met those of a brown kitten in one of the photos. I called the shelter, went to meet her a few times, and then decided to bring her home with me. For her name, I went with Momo, based on the color of her fur and the shape of her little face.

At first, Momo wasn't used to her new room and spent the first week or so hiding under the bed. She wouldn't come out even when I called her, and I really started to worry. But instead of forcing her to be touched, I just put her food out at the same time every day, and bit by bit she started coming closer on her own. These days, when I sit on the floor, she climbs up into my lap of her own accord.

Every morning, I feed Momo before heading to work. When I leave the house, she follows me to the genkan and just stares up at me. When I say "Ittekimasu," she gives a small "nyaa" back, almost like she's answering.

When I come home, she catches the sound of the door and is already waiting for me in the entryway. Even on a tired day, just seeing Momo's face is enough to lift my spirits.

Keeping a pet is fun, but there are plenty of hard parts too. You have to feed her and clean the litter box every day, trim her claws, and take her to the vet on a regular schedule. When you travel, you have no choice but to ask a friend or family member to look after her. Last month, when Momo suddenly went quiet and limp and I had to rush her to the animal hospital in the middle of the night, I was genuinely scared.

Even so, thanks to Momo, my days feel brighter than they used to. Even living alone, having someone to say "I'm home" to when I get back is a much bigger happiness than I'd realized. I really do understand now that a pet is something like family. The time I get to spend living with Momo is something I want to keep cherishing from here on out.
