昔々、ある夫婦が、隣の家の高い塀の向こうに広がる魔女の庭を見ていました。庭には「ラプンツェル」という美味しい野菜が植えてあり、奥さんはそれを食べたくて仕方がなくなってしまいました。「あれを食べないと、私はもう死にそうです」と妻が言うので、夫はこっそり塀を越えて野菜を盗みました。
Long ago, a husband and wife were gazing across the high wall next door, where a witch's garden lay. In that garden grew a delicious vegetable called rapunzel, and the wife became so desperate to eat it that she said, "If I don't have some, I think I'm going to die." So the husband secretly climbed the wall and stole some.
しかし二回目に盗みに入ったところを、魔女に見つかってしまいました。「生まれてくる赤ちゃんを私にくれるなら、許してあげましょう」と魔女は言い、夫婦は仕方なくその約束をしました。
But on his second visit, the witch caught him in the act. "I'll forgive you, on one condition," she said. "Give me the child your wife is carrying." Having no choice, the couple agreed.
やがて女の子が生まれると、魔女はすぐに赤ちゃんを連れて行き、「ラプンツェル」と名付けました。少女は森の奥にある、ドアも階段もない高い塔の中で育てられました。
In time a baby girl was born, and the witch took her away at once and named her Rapunzel. The girl was raised in a tall tower deep in the forest, a tower with no door and no stairs.
十二歳になった頃、ラプンツェルの金色の髪は、塔の窓から地面まで届くほど長くなっていました。魔女が塔の下から「ラプンツェル、ラプンツェル、髪の毛を下ろしておくれ」と呼ぶと、彼女は窓から長い髪を垂らして、魔女を上に登らせていました。
By the time she was twelve, Rapunzel's golden hair had grown so long it reached from the tower window all the way down to the ground. Whenever the witch called from below, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair," she would lower her long braid out the window so the witch could climb up.
ある日、森を馬で通りかかった王子様が、塔の上から聞こえてくる美しい歌声に足を止めました。次の日、王子様は隠れて魔女のやり方を見て、夜になってから自分も同じように「髪の毛を下ろしておくれ」と呼びました。ラプンツェルは魔女だと思って髪を下ろしましたが、上ってきたのは若くて優しい王子様でした。
One day, a prince was riding through the forest when a beautiful singing voice from the top of the tower stopped him in his tracks. The next day, he hid and watched how the witch entered, and that night he called out in the very same way: "Let down your hair." Believing it was the witch, Rapunzel lowered her braid — but who climbed up was a young and gentle prince.
二人はすぐに心を通わせ、毎晩こっそり会うようになりました。ある夜、ラプンツェルが「おばあさんを引き上げる時より、王子様のほうが軽いです」と口を滑らせてしまい、魔女に二人のことが知られてしまいました。
The two became close at once and began meeting in secret every night. One night, Rapunzel let slip, "You're much lighter to pull up than the old woman" — and the witch realized what had been going on.
魔女は怒り狂って、ラプンツェルの長い髪をはさみで切り落とし、彼女を遠くの荒野へ連れていってしまいました。
In a fury, the witch cut off Rapunzel's long hair with a pair of shears and carried her away to a distant wasteland.
その夜、何も知らない王子様が塔に来て、「髪の毛を下ろしておくれ」と呼ぶと、魔女は切り落とした髪を窓から垂らしました。王子様が上まで登ったところで、魔女は突然髪を離してしまいました。王子様は地面に落ちて、ばらの茂みの上に倒れ、両目に深い傷を負って、何も見えなくなってしまいました。
That same evening, the prince came to the tower, unaware of any of this, and called out, "Let down your hair." The witch lowered the cut braid through the window, and when the prince had climbed all the way up, she suddenly let the hair go. The prince fell to the ground and landed on a thorn bush, his eyes pierced deeply on both sides, and he could no longer see at all.
王子様は何年もの間、目が見えないまま森や野を一人でさまよい歩きました。木の実を食べたり、川の水を飲んだりしながら、ラプンツェルのことだけを思い続けていました。ある日、彼の耳に、遠くから懐かしい歌声が聞こえてきました。声のする方へ歩いていくと、そこには貧しい暮らしをしているラプンツェルと、二人の小さな子供がいました。
For years the prince wandered through forests and fields alone, blind and helpless. Eating wild berries, drinking from streams, he thought only of Rapunzel and nothing else. One day, far in the distance, his ears caught a song he had not forgotten. He walked toward the voice, and there he found Rapunzel, living in poverty with two small children.
ラプンツェルは王子様に駆け寄って、彼の首に腕を回し、嬉しさのあまり涙を流しました。その温かい涙が王子様の傷ついた両目に落ちると、不思議なことに、彼の目はだんだん見えるようになっていきました。視力を取り戻した王子様は、ラプンツェルと子供たちを連れて、自分の国へ帰りました。それから一家は王宮で迎えられ、長く幸せに暮らしたそうです。
Rapunzel ran to the prince, threw her arms around his neck, and wept with overwhelming joy. As her warm tears fell onto his wounded eyes, something miraculous happened: little by little, his sight returned. With his eyes healed, the prince took Rapunzel and the children back to his own kingdom. There the family was welcomed into the palace, and the story goes, they lived long and happy lives together.
