Remote Work Lifestyle

An office worker who shifted to working from home during the pandemic reflects on their home setup, daily rhythm, what they gained and lost, and how the team adapted.

I started working remotely in earnest three years ago, when my company changed its policy in response to the pandemic. At first I assumed it was only a temporary measure, but before I knew it my life had become almost entirely centered on working from home. These days things have settled into a rhythm where I go into the office just once a week.

When I first started, I worked with my laptop on the dining table. But that not only made my shoulders ache, it also wrecked my concentration, so I bit the bullet and turned a corner of the room into a proper workspace. The company began offering a home-office allowance, and with that money I bought a more comfortable desk and chair along with a larger monitor. There is also a stipend for internet costs, so my setup at home is now every bit as good as the office.

I get up at half past seven, take a short walk, and then make coffee. At nine we have a morning check-in over Slack where the team shares the day's plans. I spend the mornings focused on writing documents or coding, and at noon I sit down for a leisurely lunch with my wife. That hour of eating lunch with family is a luxury I never could have imagined back when I was commuting.

The good thing about remote work is not just that the commute is gone. Precisely because I no longer have to ride a packed train, both my mornings and evenings have more breathing room, and I can finally make time for hobbies like cooking, reading, and jogging. I can also handle the school pickup without straining, and I feel I have become a more patient member of the family than before.

Of course, it is not all upside. Being at home all day means I tend not to get enough exercise, and there is a real risk of my shoulders and back giving out. I have also heard, again and again within the team, that the loss of casual chatter has made onboarding new hires much harder. In meetings through a screen, expressions and the room's mood are hard to read, and small misunderstandings do crop up.

To cope, our team decided on one office day per month plus a weekly online lunch. Every time I see my coworkers' faces again after a stretch away, I am reminded that meeting in person really does matter. For new hires we switched to having them come in for their first month so that a senior colleague can sit beside them and guide them. Lately I have come to feel, quite genuinely, that fully remote is not necessarily the right answer.

Does that mean everyone should be back in the office every day? I do not think so. People work in different ways, and for those juggling family obligations, you simply cannot force a return to the office. When I went out drinking with a classmate for the first time in a year, he laughed and told me he could never go back to his old life either.

Remote work is not a cure-all, but with a few adjustments it is a perfectly viable way to work. Considering how few days I spend at the office, I get a great deal out of it, and my life has clearly become richer. I plan to keep talking with my company and looking for a balance that works for me without being a strain.
