Resolving Workplace Conflict

A conversation mediating a communication breakdown between two teams.

Manager Shimizu, thank you for making time. Could you tell me a bit about the recent lack of coordination between the sales team and the development team?

Yes, it's embarrassing to admit, but a conflict has arisen between the two teams over how to interpret the system requirements, and it's been weighing on me for the past few weeks.

Specifically, on what points are their opinions diverging? After organizing what each side is saying, I'd like to look for a thread we can pull on toward a resolution.

A disconnect has emerged between the sales team, who want to prioritize the customer's requests, and the development team, who emphasize technical feasibility. Because both sides insist solely on their own team's convenience, the discussion has been stuck running in parallel lines.

I see. It's precisely because each side's argument has some reasonable basis that the situation is hard to resolve. Sales is carrying a sales target, and development is carrying a quality commitment — these are hard positions to give ground on.

That's exactly right. Last week I had the chance to speak with both team leaders, and it seemed they each felt that "the other side doesn't understand what's happening on the ground." We can't afford to leave this as it is.

Agreed. Don't you think we should gather representatives from both teams once and set up a place for a frank discussion? I think it would be best to start, without getting emotional, from simply sharing each other's positions.

Unless we can find a point of compromise on the basis of understanding each other's positions, we won't be able to move forward. For my part, I very much want to set up that opportunity.

As the person in charge of HR, I'll be present and support the proceedings so that we can have a constructive discussion. By interviewing both sides beforehand, I believe we can organize the points of debate as well.

Those are very reassuring words. I'll get to work right away on coordinating the meeting schedule — I'd like to aim to hold it sometime next week. I'll continue to count on your help going forward.
