Long ago, in a snowy mountain village, there lived a poor but kind-hearted old man and his old wife. They had never been blessed with children, but they cared for each other always and lived their quiet days in peace.
One winter morning, when the old man went into the mountain to gather firewood, he found a crane lying on the snow. Caught in a snare, the bird could not move and was stretching out its long neck in pain.
Feeling pity for it, the old man carefully undid the trap and set the crane free. The crane flapped its wings several times, bowed deeply to him, and flew off into the white winter sky.
That night came a soft knock at the door. When the old man opened it, a beautiful young woman covered in snow stood there. "I have lost my way; please, could you let me stay just for one night?" she asked, trembling.
The old man and woman welcomed her in gladly. The girl was a tireless worker, cooking the rice and sweeping the house and caring for them as if she were their own daughter.
One day, she spoke up shyly. "To repay your kindness, please let me weave some cloth for you. But while the loom is running, you must promise never to look inside the room."
