むかしむかし、ある海辺の小さな村に、浦島太郎という心優しい若い漁師が住んでいました。年老いた母と二人暮らしで、毎日海に出て魚を取り、村の人々からも好かれていたのです。
Long, long ago, in a small village by the sea, there lived a kind young fisherman named Urashima Taro. He lived alone with his aged mother, went out each day to fish, and was well loved by the people of the village.
ある日の昼下がり、太郎が浜辺を歩いていると、子どもたちが集まって何かを棒でつついていました。近づいてみると、小さな亀が砂の上でひっくり返り、苦しそうにもがいていたのです。
One afternoon, as Taro was walking along the shore, he saw a group of children gathered together, poking at something with sticks. Drawing closer, he found a small turtle flipped on its back in the sand, struggling helplessly.
「そんなことをしてはいけない。亀がかわいそうじゃないか」と太郎は言いました。子どもたちに小銭を渡して亀を譲ってもらうと、太郎は亀を波打ち際まで運び、そっと海へ逃がしてやりました。
"You mustn't do that — the poor turtle!" Taro said. He gave the children some coins so they would hand the turtle over, carried it down to the water's edge, and gently set it free into the sea.
それから数日経ったある朝、太郎が舟で漁に出ていると、舟のすぐ横に大きな亀が浮かび上がりました。「先日助けていただいたお礼に、竜宮城へご案内します」と亀は静かに語りかけました。
A few mornings later, when Taro was out fishing in his boat, a great turtle rose to the surface right beside him. "To thank you for saving me the other day, I will guide you to the Dragon Palace," the turtle said quietly.
太郎は驚きながらも亀の背中に乗り、海の底へとぐんぐんもぐっていきました。やがて見えてきたのは、青く光るサンゴと真珠で飾られた、夢のように美しいお城でした。
Surprised but trusting, Taro climbed onto its back and sank steadily down into the depths of the sea. Before long, what came into view was a dreamlike palace decked in blue-glowing coral and pearls.
