むかしむかし、ある海辺の小さな村に、浦島太郎という心優しい若い漁師が住んでいました。年老いた母と二人暮らしで、毎日海に出て魚を取り、村の人々からも好かれていたのです。
Long, long ago, in a small village by the sea, there lived a kind young fisherman named Urashima Taro. He lived alone with his aged mother, went out each day to fish, and was well loved by the people of the village.
ある日の昼下がり、太郎が浜辺を歩いていると、子どもたちが集まって何かを棒でつついていました。近づいてみると、小さな亀が砂の上でひっくり返り、苦しそうにもがいていたのです。
One afternoon, as Taro was walking along the shore, he saw a group of children gathered together, poking at something with sticks. Drawing closer, he found a small turtle flipped on its back in the sand, struggling helplessly.
「そんなことをしてはいけない。亀がかわいそうじゃないか」と太郎は言いました。子どもたちに小銭を渡して亀を譲ってもらうと、太郎は亀を波打ち際まで運び、そっと海へ逃がしてやりました。
"You mustn't do that — the poor turtle!" Taro said. He gave the children some coins so they would hand the turtle over, carried it down to the water's edge, and gently set it free into the sea.
それから数日経ったある朝、太郎が舟で漁に出ていると、舟のすぐ横に大きな亀が浮かび上がりました。「先日助けていただいたお礼に、竜宮城へご案内します」と亀は静かに語りかけました。
A few mornings later, when Taro was out fishing in his boat, a great turtle rose to the surface right beside him. "To thank you for saving me the other day, I will guide you to the Dragon Palace," the turtle said quietly.
太郎は驚きながらも亀の背中に乗り、海の底へとぐんぐんもぐっていきました。やがて見えてきたのは、青く光るサンゴと真珠で飾られた、夢のように美しいお城でした。
Surprised but trusting, Taro climbed onto its back and sank steadily down into the depths of the sea. Before long, what came into view was a dreamlike palace decked in blue-glowing coral and pearls.
お城の門の前では、これまで見たこともないほど美しい乙姫様が、たくさんの魚たちとともに太郎を出迎えてくれました。「よくお越しくださいました。亀を助けてくださったお礼に、しばらくこちらでおくつろぎください」と乙姫様は微笑みました。
At the gate of the castle, the most beautiful Princess Otohime he had ever seen welcomed him alongside a host of fish. "Welcome — please rest here a while as thanks for saving the turtle," she said with a smile.
太郎は竜宮城で夢のような日々を過ごしました。毎日豪華な料理がふるまわれ、タイやヒラメが楽しそうに踊り、季節ごとに違う美しい部屋が次々と姿を見せたのです。
Taro spent days at the Dragon Palace as if in a dream. Lavish meals were served every day, sea bream and flounder danced for him merrily, and a different beautiful room appeared one after another with each passing season.
数日が経ったころ、太郎はふと故郷の母のことを思い出し、急に心配でたまらなくなりました。「楽しい時間でしたが、そろそろ村へ帰らなければなりません」と乙姫様に伝えると、彼女は寂しそうな表情を浮かべました。
After several days, however, Taro suddenly thought of his old mother at home and was struck with an uncontrollable worry. "It has been a wonderful time, but I really must go home to my village," he told the princess, and her face fell into a quiet sadness.
「分かりました。それでは、こちらをお持ちください。ただし、決して開けてはいけませんよ」と乙姫様は言い、美しい玉手箱を太郎に手渡しました。亀は再び太郎を背に乗せ、ゆっくりと海面まで送り届けてくれました。
"Very well. Please take this with you — but you must never open it," she said, and handed him a beautiful jeweled box. The turtle once again carried him on its back and brought him slowly up to the surface.
しかし、太郎が浜辺に降り立ってみると、村の景色はすっかり変わっていました。自分の家があった場所には知らない家が建ち、すれ違う人々の服装も話し方も、まったく見覚えのないものばかりだったのです。
But when Taro stepped onto the shore, the village had changed beyond recognition. A house he didn't know stood where his own home had been, and the clothes and speech of the people passing by were completely foreign to him.
たまたま通りかかった老人に尋ねてみると、「浦島太郎というのは、三百年以上も前に海で行方知れずになった人の名ですよ」と教えられました。竜宮城で過ごしたほんの数日の間に、陸では何百年もの時が流れていたわけです。
When he happened to ask an old man, he was told, "Urashima Taro? That is the name of a man who vanished at sea more than three hundred years ago." During the few days he had spent at the Dragon Palace, hundreds of years had passed up on land.
あまりの寂しさと混乱に、太郎はつい乙姫様との約束を忘れ、玉手箱をそっと開けてしまいました。中から白い煙がふわりと立ちのぼり、その煙を浴びた太郎は、あっという間に真っ白な髪のおじいさんになってしまったのです。
In his loneliness and confusion, Taro forgot the princess's warning and quietly opened the box. White smoke drifted softly up from inside, and the moment it touched him, Taro turned in an instant into an old man with snow-white hair.
